Capt'n Mike

The month of December has been touch and go
as far as fishing goes. My biggest fish for the
month was 8.25 with lots of nice stringers, but
the fishing has been tough, because of all of the
cold fronts and cloudy weather. The fish on Lake
Alan Henry in the winter time do not bite well on
cloudy days. If you can go fishing on a day when
the sun is bright and shining, with a south or west
wind, you might be real surprised at what you will
catch. The big fish have set up on their winter
pattern, I'm catching my fish on Rattle back Jigs
Crystal Shad is my go to color, with a pearl trailer.
I'm using 1/2 oz to 3/4 oz football head jigs.
I'm catching my fish from 20 to 35 ft deep. I'm
finding the fish on my electronics, and also fishing
the ledges and the pockets off the main lake, and
in the middle of the creek channels in all the major
creeks and rivers. If you have cabin fever and your
tired of thinking of fishing and not going you are
ripping yourself off. We have a lot of mild weather
within the next 7 to 10 days and lots of sunshine.
Thank You Lord!!!!
I have special winter time rates, $300 a day for
1 to 2 people.
Have a Happy New Year!

12/26/11  There are still some die hards fishing.  Capt'n  Mike

Fished Dec. 21st from ten in morning till five thirty, water temp upGrape was 49 degrees. Caught ten bass all in 2 to 3 lb. range on crankbaits. Fish were stacked in pretty well all day. Bass Nasty fishing team.

12/25/11  Ho Ho Ho, Merry Christmas from the Lodges,  in my 62 two years of living in

West Texas this is the first white Christmas, were it snowed the night before, that I have seen.  Capt'n Mike

Merry Christmas Ya'll

11/29/11  It's about time for some big ones to be caught, way to go guys.  Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike,

Today I fished with Steve Downing and Joe Bartlett from Lubbock.
It was a good day considering the 60 mph winds the day before
out of the North. The very high winds stirred the lake up real
good. The water clarity was a little off but as the day went on
the water seemed to clear up. Our biggest fish of the day were
8.25 and 5.8 lbs and Joe had the biggest fish in his entire bass fishing
career, break him off at the side of the boat. If he had been using
20lb Seaguar he would have had a possible Share Lunker, it was a
true giant no just a 10lber. We were catching our fish in shad colored
baits right now the fishing on Lake Alan Henry is very good for big fish.
We were catching our fish in the middle of the creek channels the whole lake
is good fishing. From Rocky Creek to Gobler, Little Grape, and Big Grape
here is a very good tip...Do Not ignore the main lake cuts. We are
catching our fish from 20 to 35 ft of water. Timing is essential before and
after the cold fronts. This is the winter time pattern it will stay this way
until mid February the bass are fat sassy and hungry I have special
winter time rates for those people that want to catch a very large fish.
We are fishing for big fish not numbers. After Joe lost his fish of a
life time he told me he wanted to go to a bar and have a few drinks
and beat his head against a wall, the fish he lost was the biggest fish
he has seen in 10 years. Joe is a very accomplished and mythological
fisherman and still keeps an open mind and likes to learn.
I recon that there will be many sleepless nights for Joe for the next
few weeks, but he is a big boy and he will get over it.
GO FISHING!!!! Fish have to eat to stay alive, they don't quit biting
in the winter.

11/20/11   It's time to get in a little fishing before deep winter gets here. Capt'n  Mike

11-17-11

Captn Mike,

Today I fished with Wes Holloway and his
son, father and son team from Roswell, N.M.
The day after a major cold front we were fishing
in 20 to 35 mph winds and the wind made it tough
to feel our bites. We were catching our fish on
my custom made Shaky Heads, it was a tough
day. We caught maybe, half of our bites.
We also caught fish on Hawg Caller spinner
baits with pearl and blue flash skirts.
Water temp 58 degrees and we were fishing
the east end of the lake. Don't be afraid of the
cold because winter time fishing at Lake Alan Henry
is great. The boat traffic is light and the big fish
are biting. Our biggest fish of the day was close to
4lbs the batteries on my scales were dead and could
not weigh our fish. 2 days ago I had a 7.5lb and a
client had a solid 6lb fish. Every day is different this
time of year timing is everything, if a cold front is
coming give me a call, or 2 to 3 days after a cold
front when the fish recover, but the deep water
bite the cold fronts don't affect the fishing as bad.
Their tiring to feed up and get fat and sassy for the
spawn, and the fish are schooled up. Wherever you catch
one there will be a lot more. This is the time of the year
when good electronics are a must to find the fish.
Until next time stay sharp Ultra Point sharp.

11/7/11  Moon is getting fuller, good fishing ahead.  Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike,

Today I fished with Jay Watson from California.
Our day started out great we had 10 fish in the boat
within the 1st hour, and the wind quit blowing and the
bite got tough. Later in the afternoon around 2:00pm
the wind started blowing out of the south and the bite
picked up and was a strong bite. We fished from
Big Grape to Rocky Creek we were using my custom
built Shaky heads and Big Bite Sinko attached to them
once again the color was Watermelon and Chartreuse
The fish were in 17ft to 30ft of water our total catch
of the day was 24 fish with 5 over 18" and the biggest
going 4.24lbs. Fishing remains very good. Water temp
was 60 degrees when we started out and climbed to
63 degrees. Around 2:00pm the wildlife started moving
around when the fish started biting, we saw 2 bob cats
on 2 different parts of the lake, and saw a lot of deer
moving around, also saw one of the biggest white tail
bucks I have ever seen. It was opening weekend of
deer season and I never heard a shot fired all day long.

11/4/11   Time to go fishing and everyone is afraid of a little cold weather, remember those 108* days not long ago.  Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike,

Today I fished with Joe Bartlett from Lubbock.
Water temp was 64 to 62 degrees, with an approaching
cold front. Our total catch of the day was 36 fish,
many over 18" we were fishing in Rocky Creek, Gobbler
Creek, and in Big Grape. We caught most of our fish on
Shaky heads with Watermelon and Chartreuse Big Bite Sinkos
and about a dozen were caught on Crank baits. We were catching
our fish in 17ft to 5ft of water. The bigger fish are moving in
off the main lake and the big girls aren't far behind. Fishing is
getting better by the week. Call me to book your trips, winter
fishing at Lake Alan Henry is great, especially for big fish.
They are starting to feed and get fat for winter, I heard of
an 11lb that was caught and I was also told that a 13lb was
caught and released. I guess they did not know that the Share
Lunker Program runs from October until May. I have special rates
for winter time fishing the time change is coming and the days are
getting shorter.

10/30/11  Water temp is perfect.  Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike,

Today I fished with Stewart Keene and Travis Sinclair.
The day started out great we boated 12 fish within 1
hour from starting, we fished from 8:00am until 2pm
our total catch of the day was 30 fish. We caught our
fish on the east end of the lake and out of Ennis Cove
all on shaky heads, white was the color. My brother
Danny and his son were fishing in the same area, and
boated 27 fish. Another friend of the family Steve Downing
was fishing alone in Gobbler Creek and in Rocky Creek,
he boated 18 fish by himself, most of his were caught
on crank baits. We did not catch any large fish but had
a lot of fish over 18" with the biggest going over 4lbs.
It was a very good day considering a major cold front
had just passed. All of our total catch of the day was 75
fish in the boat. We were all using 20lb Seaguar line
invisible is invincible. The fishing at Lake Alan Henry
is very good. We caught our fish from 5ft of water
down as deep as 30ft.

1025/11  Go fishing it is time, the temp is right and fish are being caught.  Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike,

Today I fished with Richard Briant from Hobbs, N.M. for the 2nd
time this month, the day started out great we put 19 fish in the
boat in 4 hours and lost 8 or 9 fish, the fish that we caught were
quality fish. We were catching our fish on crank baits and shaky
heads, and for some unknown reason between 11:30 and 12:00 pm
the fish just stopped biting. I think the approaching cold front shut
the fish off. It went from great fishing to short strikes and fish
not holding onto our baits.

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Bill Glass of Floydada on 10-24-11. We caught 36 bass on shaky head jigs, drop
shot rigs, and crank baits. The bass were in 10 to 25 feet of water. We caught most of these
bass just before my engine blew after lunch. We used watermelon red, blue, and shad
colored worms on our drop shots and shaky head jigs. We caught them on the east end of
the lake. Two of the fish were spotted bass over 18 inches long with most of the other bass
were of good quality. We lost or broke off several good fish in the trees.

While fishing, we saw a bobcat, and about 20 to 30 turkeys feeding down the bank.

10/21/11  If you have not dusted off the boat it is time too, go fishing.  Capt'n Mike

10/18/11   When Capt'n Mike starts putting up a fishing report, just about everyday, you know the bite is on.  Go Fishing  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

Today I fished with Michael Penn and Charlie Witte from Odessa, TX.
The day started out great Mike and Charlie had 5 fish in the boat
before I had a bite. Our timing was perfect, we were fishing before
a major cold front hit, we had a 15 mph wind starting out from the
south, and the fish were turned on BIG TIME. Our total catch of the
day was 55 fish in the boat. Mike and Charlie both had big fish hooked
and jumped and got away!!!
I caught the biggest fish of the day, an 8.5 lb only one problem, it needed
to shave, had whiskers it was a blue cat.
We were fishing points on the east end of the lake, with my custom built
shaky heads. The Seaguar line made a big difference we only lost one jig head.
Our total catch should have been in the 70's but we did not catch all
of the bites, but nobody had any complaints.
Give me a call to book your trips fall fishing is great,
I know What, Where, When, and How to catch the fish.

10/16/11  Every week now is getting better, fall is here.  Capt'n MikeCapt'n Mike,

I fished with Dwight Yarbrogh, Scott Halbrooks (his 18th birthday), and Keegan Moore(17
years old) of Wolfforth on 10-15-11. There was no wind, dead calm, which made the fishing
very difficult. We managed to get some bass in the boat. We had several fish hit or follow the
lure all the way to the boat. We caught the fish on crank baits and one on a spinner bait. It
was a pleasure fishing with these young men. They are our future fisherman.

The lake's in good shape with great numbers of shad in shallow water. Water temperature
was about 70 degrees everywhere.

10/15/11   We have a cool down coming next week, it is time to fish.  Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike

Today I fished with Jeremy Swartzwelder from Plano, TX and
Kevin Dunn from Lubbock for the 3rd time this year.
The lake was calm and slicked off and the fishing was on the
tough side due to no wind. We managed to catch 18 fish
no big ones and had several large fish follow our baits to
the boat and turn away. I personally think this was due
to lack of wind and a full moon at night.
We caught all of our fish on crank baits and we
got to witness something very cool, we saw a lot
of bass jumping completely out of the water and
catching dragon flies out of the air. The fish
are relatively shallow and the water temp
is 70 degrees. The fishing is fair to great on
Lake Alan Henry depending upon the wind and
the moon phase. The water is cooling down and
the top water bite should pick up. The lake
is crystal clear, I'm using 15lb and 20lb test
Seaguar InvisX this really helps your bite ratio
I'm also catching quality fish on Black and Blue
Rattle back Jigs 1/2oz.

10/13/11  It's sure getting better.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Gordan Kelcep of Wellman, TX on 10-12-11. We boated 14 bass on a day when
a big north wind hit in the morning. It really made fishing difficult, but we did manage to catch
mostly spotted bass until the wind died down. Then we did catch a couple of good
largemouths. We caught bass on shad colored Red Eye Shads and Senkos.

10/08/11   The shad are beginning to go up the creeks.   Temp will be falling after today.  Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike,

Today I fished with Richard Briant from Hobbs, N.M.
We were fishing the east end of the lake with Shad
colored crank baits and black and blue 1/2oz rattle back
football head jigs. We had 3 sad stories, we lost 3
big fish, one giant. The wind was blowing 25mph to 35mph
and it was hard to feel your bites until they pulled on it and
then it was to late. Richard is a very good fisherman
and we had a very successful day and had 10 other fish
that we did not boat. Water temp is 70 degrees and I
fished 3 straight days in a row and the wind never stopped
blowing under 25mph. The lake is in great shape and the
bite is great.

10/07/11  This lake tends to be a foul weather catch fish lake, this weekend should be good.  Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike,

Today I fished with Gordan Graves from Spade, TX.
We fished in a sustained 25mph wind with gust over
40mph. We were fishing crank baits on the east end
of the lake. Our total catch of the day was 18 fish
10 over 18" and Gordan caught the biggest fish of the
day, which was a beautiful 8lb 3oz bass.
Gordan has only been bass fishing for a very short
time but is a very quick learner and a pleasure to
fish with. Congratulations Gordan on your big fish.
Most people have to fish a long time before they
even break the 6lb mark, Gordan jumped up the

10/05/11  The forecast calls for thunderstorms this weekend, come to the lake and do a rain dance, you can bet the change in weather will turn the fish on.  The lake is in great shape about 7 ft down which is nothing to this lake.  Gary P Nunn is playing for free at the courthouse square in Snyder Friday night and Saturday night Thirty Special is playing at the Snyder Bike Fest....  Come have a good time and catch fish too.  Capt'n Mike  ps we still have some vacancies, at Lake Alan Henry Lodges [ 806.777.0337 ]as of Wednesday morning.

Capt'n Mike,

Rocky Alburtis, Bill Townley(not shown), and I ran Rocky's trotline that Rocky and I baited
yesterday. On 10-4-11 we ran the line, the three of us ran the line. We had these 4 catfish
with the largest going 24 lbs. Catfishing is really great at this time.

10/01/11  This is setting up to be a real good fall.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Clayton Roberts, Bryan Roberts, Carter Roberts (7years old), and Cooper
Roberts (4 years old) of Lamesa, TX on 9-30-11. It was a challenging day to get these two
young men to catch fish on artificial lures, but they both caught their own fish using Senko's.
We caught 10 bass on a day when a cold front hit out of the north. We had a steady strong
wind out of the northeast all day.

These two young men were remarkable for their staying power. They fished hard all day, and
was not realy to quit after fishing all day. This was a great family to spend the day with on the
water.

The water temperature was 74.3 degrees.

09/30/11  Some good fish beginning to be caught, but better fishing is coming.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike, My wife and I enjoyed our stay again at the lodge. We got into some good top water action monday the 26th.  catching around 15 fish. water was 74 degrees early and got up to 76 later in the day. It was pretty hot the three days we fished. My biggest four from monday was right at 11.82. The single biggest was close to 4 lbs.! My wife lost a couple of good ones that day :(  Tuesday we did not fair as well boating only 6 or 7 on 7 inch watermelon/red flake worms texas rig! still was a blast! I think the better fishing is yet to come! The dragon flies swarming in the shallows early and late was the ticket for the top water bite. I missed several good fish( 5 + lbs) monday on my spook due to them just blasting it out of the water! We left early wednesday with nothing but there's always next trip! Here are some pics of the better fish! Thanks again mike!

09/27/11  These cool mornings are sure going to bring the temp down.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Jack Tiffin of Earth, TX, Clay Tiffin of Lubbock, and Paul Rogers of San Diego,
CA on 9-26-11. We caught 25 bass on senkos, 7" power worms, and crankbaits. The two fish
in the picture were caught on one cast. A largemouth on one hook and a spottted bass on the
other. The largest bass we caught went 3 lbs. 9 ozs., but we saw much larger bass
swimming in shallow water.

The water temperature was 75 to 78 degrees.

09/23/11  Great weather, the autumn evening are wonderful and the fishing is picking up.   Capt'n Mike

Today I fished with Chris Nava from Lubbock, Tx.,
during a passing cold front, the temp was 55 degrees
when we got started with a 20 to 25 mph NE wind and
misting rain. We managed to boat 22 fish with our biggest
fish going right at 5lbs. We caught all of our fish on
Crank Baits and Top Waters. The fish were shallow,
anywhere from 1ft to 10ft deep. We had to work for
what we caught. We fished from Gobler Creek to Little Grape
The lake is in excellent condition and Fall Fishing is here.
Water temp was right at 74 degrees. I'm excited because
I would rather catch 1 fish on a Top water than 10 fish on

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Larry Frymire of Abilene on 9-20-11, and we caught 12 bass on 7" watermelon
red flake worms, spinnerbaits, Red Eye Shad Charturse, and 4.5" Rattlesnake  watermelon
charturse worms.

It was a tough day to get bites, and it was a tough day to catch bass of any size. We did see
some good bass swimming in shallow water, but they would not bite.

Capt'n Mike,

I night fished with Reese McBroom on 9-12-11. We had a beautiful full moon to light up the
night. From about 8:30 p.m. until about 1:30 a.m., we caught 14 fish up to a little over 4 lbs.
The fish were not aggressive in their bite, and we missed many bites because to was hard to
tell if the fish were biting or it was a tree bass biting. It was a little windy, but it was nice and
cool with the coyotes singing to the moon.

Captn Mike

Today I fished with Gordan Graves from Spade, Texas.
Gordan had never been bass fishing before or used bait
casting tackle, but being a very fast learner within an
hour he was casting very well. Our total catch of the
day was between 25 and 30 fish, with many quality fish
over 18" but no giants. We were fishing on the East end
of the lake with shad colored baits and Shaky Heads and
Sinkos. The bite was a little on the tough side, and the
fish were not eating the bait aggressively, I think we lost
more fish than we caught. We fished from 7:30am until
4:00pm with a 10 mph north wind, it was a beautiful day
with scattered clouds and cool temperatures.
Fall Fishing is Here!!
Since school has started and the temperatures have cooled
down there is not as much traffic on the lake and the fish
are moving up out of the deep water. The fish are getting
fatter. Water temperature is still between 79 and 82 degrees.
Lake is in great shape and the fish are biting.

09/06/11  Looks like the lake will be about 7ft. down when good fishing hits this fall,  It will still be one of Texas few lakes that have enough water in it to launch a boat.  Pesonally I like it like this you have less wind.  Capt'n Mike

Today I fished with my brother Danny and life long family friend Steve Downing
We were fishing the mid lake area in 20 to 30ft of water. We had a light
South wind before the cold front hit the fish were turned on big time.
Our total catch of the day was 72 fish with the biggest going around 5 lbs.
We were catching these fish on shad colored baits and using Seaguar line
in the ultra clear water. We were also catching our fish on Shaky heads
and Sinkos. Fall fishing is here
The fishing on Lake Alan Henry is getting better by the day, water temp
is dropping so is the outside temperature making it for nice fishing during
the day. The big girls are coming out of suspension and the lake is
in great shape considering the drought.

I fished with Hope and Tobyn Dyer from Midland August 21, 2011,
a very enjoyable husband and wife team. They had struggled on
Lake Alan Henry to catch fish. We fished on a Sunday after the lake
had been beat up pretty hard. We fished from 6:30 am to 12:00 pm.
We caught 26 fish on Shad colored baits in about 30 ft of water.
Our biggest fish of the day was 4lbs and many other quality fish.
We put the trolling motor down and never left our area. They were
quick learners and enjoyed the beauty of Lake Alan Henry.
Look forward to fishing with you guys again, by the way

08/20/11  Sounds like night fishing is the way to go right now.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I night fished with Reese McBroom of Lubbock on the night of 8-18-
11, and we caught 20 fish up to nearly 4 lbs. on 10" blue fleck
power worms. It was hot when we started, but the temperature went
down into the lower 70's which made for a really nice fishing night.
We had about 5/8 of a moon.

08/17/11  One thing about the lake you can always jump in and stay cool... Capt'n Mike

August 16 & 17, 2011

Captn Mike,

Today I fished with Nathan King a Texas Tech student
with his grandfather and his uncle.
We fished from 6:00 am until 12:00 noon for 2 days. We
caught a total of 86 fish anywhere from 0.5lbs to 4.0lbs.
We did not catch any big fish but had a constant bend in
our rods. We were fishing the East end of the lake with
Sinko's and Shaky Heads the fish were very deep, 30 to 40 ft.
The Seaguar line made a big difference in our bites, you can not
see InvisX in the water. The water is crystal clear the lake is in
great shape despite the drought.
Hey folks school starts NEXT WEEK, it will thin out all the other
water activities.
Summer time fishing remains great, give me a call to book your
trips. I have been on fish all summer long.

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Larry Frymire of Abilene the night of 8-15-11. We had
a good moon which things a lot easier to see. We caught 24 bass with
the largest largemouth going over 4 lbs., and the largests two
spotted bass going well over 20 inches long. We weighted the largest
spot at 3 lbs. 3 ozs. We caught most of the fish on 10 inch power
dark colored power worms.

Today I fished with Jason and Chris Westfall from Odessa, Texas.
We were on a night fishing trip, we fished from Rocky Creek to
Big Grape. We were using Carolina rigs with Top Brass weights
and Glass Beads and Pro Tickers with Mustads new 45 degree
5.0 hooks. This is a new hook on the market, it is the best hook
I have ever used you do not loose fish. We were using Black
10" Power worms and Black 6.5 Tornados. The fishing was good
but a little on the tough side. We had to work for what we caught.
We boated around 20 fish all black bass except for 1 spot.
Our biggest fish of the evening was a beautiful 7.60 and a
5.80 lb bass. These were 2 very good fishermen in their early
30's.  Had a great time with you guys. Look forward to our next trip.

08/12/11  We got a little rain last night, about a 1/4 of an inch that makes it nearly 2 inches since last August.   The lake is about 6 ft. down, no problem for this lake, still plenty of boat ramp.  Capt'n Mike

I fished around the dam this morning. I caught six small bass on Gulp minnows. Talked to a couple of other fishermen and they were only catching small bass.

Today we had a family get together at my brother Danny's
house at Lake Alan Henry. We had 6 fishermen and 3 boats
it was a great day of fishing, we fished from 7:00am until
12:30pm we caught a lot of quality fish, 69 fish boated.
Nobody took a camera out, I apologize for no photos.
Their weight was anywhere from 1.5 lbs to 8.11 lbs.
My son Justin caught the biggest fish of the day.
We were using Carolina rigs and shaky heads with
Tornado's we were fishing the whole lake from
Big Grape to Rocky Creek we were catching our fish
from 20ft to 45ft of water !!!! We had a good wind which
made the fish bite better than the previous day. I have
special summer time rates for trips from 6:00am to 12:00pm,
I also have trips for the very serious anglers we will fish
from 6:00am to 11:00am then the trip will continue from
9:00pm into the night depending on the moon phase.
This is a great opportunity to get in on the morning bite
and enjoy a great evening and night time trip, I have
the fish pinpointed no catch no pay. Until next time

Today I fished with Casey Buckman and his dad from Acuff TX.
We were fishing the West end of the lake off the channel bends
and main lake points. We managed to boat 15 fish from 1.5 lbs
to 4.5 lbs. Casey's dad caught our biggest fish 4.8 lbs and had a
couple of other sad stories lost big fish. We were fishing Carolina
rig worms we fished from 6:30am to 12:30pm the bite was
a little on the tough side due to no wind. Lake is in great shape
and fishing remains good. I have some openings for night fishing

08/06/11  Man is it hot, just a little bit of rain would sure help, the lake is in great shape, a little over 5 1/2 ft down, plenty of water and boat ramp.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with my brother, Boyd, and Reese McBroom for about 5 1/2
hours during the day on 8-4-11. We caught 7 bass to a little over 2
pounds on worms and crankbaits. We lost several others in the trees.
The fish we found were 10 to 20 feet deep with most in the deeper
water. Motor oil with red flake were the worms.

We quit around noon when the seats on the boat were so hot that it
felt like it burned your botton when you sat on the seat.

I'm ready for the moon to start helping so we can do some cool night
fishing.

I have charted the moon from the 9Th of August until the 18Th of August
it's going to be a great month for night fishing from the 9Th until the 18Th
You do not have to wait for the moon to come up at 1:00 am. This
is a great opportunity to catch a fish of a lifetime. I have 6 spots
on the lake that are producing very large fish on a consistent pattern.
So let's go night fishing and catch the big ones.

Captn Mike,

Today I fished with Dallas Stevenson from Denver City TX.
Although yesterday was a fabulous day, today was a dream day.
Within the first 30min of the day Dallas had 2 fish in the 4lb class
and I had 1, and the day just got better. We were fishing for big
fish on the West end of the lake on the channel bends again, with
Carolina rigs my biggest fish of the day was a 6.10lb and Dallas's biggest
fish of the day was 8lbs. Our 5 biggest fish weighted 30lbs. and
I had a another sad story, but sad stories are just sad stories.
Lost a Giant.. had a fish that broke 20lb Seaguar.
We fished from 6:00am until 2:00pm the day time bite is great.
Motor oil and red was the go to color. Dallas wanted some fish
to take home to eat but we could not catch any small fish for him
to take home so he went home empty handed, but he had a big
smile on his face. The 3 photos in this fishing report were our biggest
fish that were boated. I'm on a big time big fish summer time bite.

Today I fished with Jerrod Hall and Jeremy Hex. We were fishing the
West End of the lake on the break lines in 20 to 30 ft of water, on
the channel bends. These were our 4 biggest fish that we boated
our biggest fish that we caught was almost 7lbs, with the total
4 fish stringer weighing over 20lbs. It was a very good day we only
caught 3 spots the rest were large mouth bass, and we did not catch
our biggest fish that we had hooked, sad stories are just sad stories.
These fish were caught from 6:00am until 2:00pm. We caught our fish
on Carolina rigs, using 20lb test Seaguar and the new Mustad Ultra Point
45 degree angle 5.0 hooks and using Top Brass weights and Glass beads.
It was a steady bite all day long. Day time fishing is GREAT !!

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Ed Mettler of Amarillo on the night of July 20th. We
caught 20 bass with the largest spotted bass going 3 lbs. 8 ozs.,
and the largest largemouth going nearly 3 lbs. We did loose some
good fish in the trees. It's harder to keep them out of the trees at
night.  We had a little over a half moon. The moon came up around
midnight, and it was really hard fishing until that moon got up.

We used Berkley's Havoc twin tail worms Texas rigged and on shakey
head jigs. We used 10 inch blue fleck power worms and wild thangs.
Most of the bass were caught on the 10 inch worms.

August 13th will be the next full moon. It's good to plan a cool
night trip around the full moon because the fisherman can see what
they are doing.

07/18/11  The full moon has been great.   Capt'n MikeCapt'n Mike,

Capt'n Mike, I fished with Robin Nix of Midland, and Karen Townson
of Odessa the night of July 15th on the full moon. We caught 13 bass
with at least two of the spotted bass going over 18 inches. We had a
little wind, but it was a beautiful night. We were using 10 blue
fleck power worms with glass rattles inside of them. The largest
fish we had on hung Karen in a tree. The fish was on for a good
while, but it would not work itself free. The water was to deep to
reach the fish. It was hooked about 12 feet deep.

spotted bass, and on the small side. These two are really fun to

07/17/11  Still some schooling bass being caught of of big water.  Capt'n Mike

Captn' Mike

Today I fished with Ray and Alex Holguin from Artesia N.M.
Our day started out great Alex who is 11 yrs old had 3 fish
in the boat before his dad and I had a bite. I told him if he caught
another fish before I did I was going to push him in the water!!
Alex got lucky and I caught a fish we were fishing schooling fish
with top waters and casting spoons in the dam area. After we
were through chasing the schooling fish we broke out the DD16's
and trolled underneath the schooling fish and caught some beautiful
spotted bass and kept enough for them to have dinner that night.
After that we headed for the West end of the lake and were fishing
my custom made shaky head jigs with Seaguar line 15lb test and
caught many quality black bass. This was the second time this year
that I fished with Ray and Alex our total catch for 1/2 days fishing
was 32 fish, no giants but lots of quality fish. Ray spends a lot of time
and has great patience with Alex, I have never seen such a young child
with as good mechanic as Alex has, this does not come without a lot
of time on the water, He stays happy, focused, and is a joy to be with.
They always stay at Lake Alan Henry Lodges where the best accommodations

Captn Mike,

Today  I fished with Brady Sansom and his dad Larry from Brownfield, TX.
The day started out absolutely great within the first 45 min of being on the
water we boated 25 fish, between the 3 of us. Between 1/2 lb and 3 lbs
our total catch for the day was around 60 to 70 fish, Brady and I both lost
count. After we got tired of fishing the schooling fish we decided to go
underneath them and trolled, with crank baits that dive to 16 ft. Repala DT16
and Brady lost a very large fish while trolling that was between 6 to 7 lbs, it
jumped completely out of the water, sometimes your a hero and sometimes your
a zero. Look forward to fishing with you next time, Brady!!

07/05/11  Some good fishing even  off the crappie house.  Capt'n Mike

Fishing has been great for Bass off the crappie deck for large Bass. I

fish that have hit have been in 15-30 feet of water. Feel free to post
the pics on the website.

07/04/11  What a beautiful July 4 weekend,  fishermen are happy and the skiers are having fun, what a great lake.  Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike,

On the 29th I fished with Justin Herzog from Lubbock, TX.
He had not learned how to fish with bait casting reels yet
being a very fast learner and a very smart person, within
30 min he was casting like he had been doing it for years.
The bite was very good and the fish were schooling very
hard on the main lake between Mud Island and the big
Point by the dam. He was fascinated by how many fish
we were catching and how many there were. However
the next day on the 30Th I had Jeremy Hext also from
Lubbock. We started out dragging Carolina rigs
on his 1st cast he lost a very large fish that bushed
him and broke his line. He was using 12lb test line.
We re spooled his reel with 20lb Seaguar InvisX
within 30 min he landed a 6.25 lb, we thought the bite
was going to be real good that day, however the
wind picked up and started blowing 30 to 35 mph.
It broke up the bait fish and the fish did not school,
we only boated 7 fish, but he caught the second biggest
fish he has ever caught out of Lake Alan Henry. Jeremy
has only been bass fishing 3 yrs. Because of the bad weather
and bad winds I offered him a free day on his next trip.
Hopefully the wind won't ruin the trip next time.

Hey Captain Mike,

I just wanted to send you some information concerning the bass I caught in Big Grape on June 28, 2011.  It weighed 9 lbs, 8 ounces, was 26 inches long and 18 inches in girth before the dorsal fin. I caught this fish using a minnow on a rod and reel. It is the biggest fresh water fish I've ever caught and I'm really proud of it.  My husband Paul took measurements and lots of pictures before we released this beautiful fish back into its natural environment. I have attached a few photographs with this e-mail.

Thanks,

06/26/11  The way it is going fishing will be still good on the 4th of July.  Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike,

The bite on Alan Henry is as good as ii gets for numbers and quality fish.
the fish are schooling all over the lake. Do not just fish one school of fish
stop and check all the schools of fish. Some can be small some can be
medium and some can be very large. I am catching these fish on top waters
crank baits and jerk baits. It is very important to use fluorocarbon line
the fish can not see the line especially the Seaguar InvisX.
           Invisible is Invincible!!!
The Shaky head bite still remains very good, also sinkos.
I had a very very large fish that I put lots of pressure on and broke my
favorite rod into 3 pieces. Sometimes your a hero and Sometimes
your a zero.
I have never had a fish destroy my rod and then straighten out the hook
when she was finished with me. It was hard to sleep that night.

06/21/11  Still good bass fishing going on and it is sure nice to jump in the cool water of this lake at a 100^ day.   Capt'n  Mike

Captn Mike,

Today I fished with Mike and Judy Dunham from Midland TX.
We were fishing on the East end of the lake, with Top Waters
The bite was a very strong and steady bite, and it was a cool
day, only 94 degrees with a 15 to 20 mile an hour north wind
they took advantage of one of my 6 hour trips which turned into
8 hours, because the bite was so good. I do not pull my customers
off of biting fish. After we were through catching fish on Top Waters
Mike wanted me to show him how to fish the Shaky Head with
a Tornado, California Red was the color today.
I caught a 9.28 in 20ft of water. This fish just came off a spawning
bed. As you can see by the photo, her tail was roughed up.
There are still spawning fish on the lake, in the deep clear water.
I caught the 9.28 on the island in the mouth of Little Grape.
Also, there is a good bite on the West Bank behind the island
in Little Grape. Around 2:30 it started getting hot so we left biting
fish. The schooling activity is absolutely great.  Top Water fishing
is the funnest way to fish in the whole world. Give me a call and

06/18/11  The lake is still in good shape, only about 4ft  down from full,  that's a lot better than most lake's in Texas right now.  Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike,

Today I fished with Chris Nava and his dad Rene. We were fishing
the West end of the lake. The fish are stacked up in the thermocline
following the bait fish. It was a tough day of fishing with no wind early
in the morning, but we managed to catch some quality fish. Chris
caught a 7.65 lb on one of my custom made shaky head jigs with
a Motor Oil and red flake tornado. It was a beautiful fish, and I
myself was happy and sad at the same moment, lost a giant
fish, that ran into the brush and sawed me off. Sometimes your
a hero and sometimes your a zero. Great job Chris!!!
On the East end of the lake in the dam area, the fish are schooling
very heavily, these are not just little fish, their quality fish and
we're catching them on crank baits and top waters. Some of the
best top water fishing of the year is right now!! These fish will
remain active in their schooling mode through out the summer.

I am seeing a tremendous amount of fish schooling on top
of the water and my graph is absolutely showing hundred and
hundreds of fish, on the main lake in the clear water, suspended
at 10 to 25 ft over 45 to 60 ft deep.
This is a great opportunity for a great fishing trip
for anyone that wants to catch a large quantity of fish. All you
have to do is troll,  but it is very important that your bait
runs at the proper depth. You don't want to go under the
fish. The fish will feed upwards towards the bait,  the shad
are in the thermocline, they feel the vibrations of the bait and come
up after it. This is a easy way to fish, even with children.
They don't get bored because they are to busy catching
fish. You can start early in the morning and end when it
gets to hot. Also eat the spotted bass, everybody needs to
fill their freezer, they taste great, my whole family eats them.
Call me to book a trip for a day full of fun.

06/8/11  Something you do not see everyday.  Capt'n Mike

Captn Mike,

Today I fished with James Wright and Tye Taylor from Lovington, N.M.
We fished the West end of the lake. The fish on the West end of the lake
have recovered from their spawning. They are set up in their summer
time mode. The fish are very active despite the 104 degree temp and
20 mph wind. We caught all of our fish on Shaky heads with tornado's
attached. Chartreuse & watermelon and pumpkin with red flake are what
the fish were biting the best. We had a very strong and steady bite through
out the day. 90% of our fish that we caught were Black bass and were quality
fish. James caught the largest fish that we put in the boat, 7.25 lbs all of our
fish were caught out of 15 to 25 ft of water. Be sure and drink plenty of
water and/or Powerade, the heat will take a toll on you.
I'm looking forward to the full moon. The main lake fish on the east end
will be wrapping up their spawn. I'm seeing a lot of schooling activity
 especially in the clear water.
The fun fishing is fixing to break loose.
Call me for you night fishing trips on the full moon cycles.
The reason that the Black bass bite is so good is that it looks like the
spots have headed for the deep water and are schooling. This schooling
activity will continue to progress through out the summer. The lake is
dropping everyday, The main lake water is so clear the fish can see a bait
from 30 ft away. It is very important that you use Seaguar line InvisX 15lb test
in the clear water. The fish can not see the fluorocarbon line.
In the stained water you need to use 20lb test. We had many fish run into the brush
and break us off and saw us off while using the 15lb test. You have to man handle these
fish because their holding tight to the cover. James lost a giant fish because
he did not set hook hard enough and pull the fish out of the cover. This happened
to us many times through out the day, if we had caught all of our fish we would have
boated 40 to 50 fish. I was surprised at the number of big fish that we lost
because they are setting so tight in the brush. Set hook hard and pull!!!!
Until next time I'm Phillip Pool and I'm Gone Fish'n

Hi my name is Tim Havins and I was reading the story about the deer out in the lake and had the same thing happen to my over by the dam and I got some photos and thought you might be interested in them.  I watched this deer swim all the way across the lake over to the dam and when she got there she could barely stand up but did finally run off.

Captn Mike,

Today I fished with Jordan Rogers a Texas Tech student.
A very good fisherman with very good mechanics.
We fished in a 40 mph sub stained wind, it was hard
to feel all of our bites. We caught our fish on Carolina rig
with 6.5 Tornado's in motor oil and red flake, and on
my custom made shaky head jigs. Here is a pic
of a 10.2 that is a very short fish. This fish was photographed
weighted and released immediately. This is a pre spawn fish!!!!!
June spawn is in full swing, fish are moving up daily and the
post spawn bite is fantastic. We fished in Big Grape and

Today I fished with David Balldsteros . Although David has fished Lake
Alan Henry many time over the years his success rate has been very poor.
He had been fishing lots of Crank baits and Spinner baits, and spent most
of his time getting un-hung with very poor catch ratio. He hired me
to teach him how to fish with plastic baits. He had never in his life
fished with plastics. We were fishing the Shaky head with motor oil
and red flake tornado. We started catching fish within the first 5 min
on the water. We were fishing in Ince cove the wind was blowing
30 to 40 mph, despite the high winds the bite remained very strong
through out the day. After spending a couple of hours with David,
being a fast learner, he could not believe the number of fish that
we were catching and the quality. We hooked several very large fish
but did not manage to get them in the boat. It seemed like they knew
where every bush in the lake was. It was one of those days where
you were happy and sad at the same time. Due to loosing very large
fish,  I'm going to speak to y'all about current, current can be caused
by wind, water flow, and boat wakes. This puts oxygen in the water and
turns the fish on. So when you are getting upset on the weekend due
to heavy boat traffic, be thankful for the boat wakes, if it slicks off
and gets hot and there is no current,  the bite will get very slow.
Another subject in the late afternoon and early evening,  even after dark
the fish are moving up towards the shallows to feed. The lake
quites down and the Top water bite starts, and it also cools down
to where it makes the evening more enjoyable. Right now we have a lot
of spawning fish that can be caught easier in the evening and at night,
when there is not as much fishing pressure on them. Call me and
talk to me about booking your evening and night fishing trips.
The fish will continue to spawn all the way through the month of June.
The main lake spawn always happens in late May and through June.
because the water is so deep it takes longer for the water to reach
that magic temperature. There has also been a dragon fly hatch,
thank goodness, their eating the gnats and other fling insects, which
improves the top water bite drastically. Until next time stay sharp
and I mean Ultra Point sharp.

Today I fished with Ray Holguin and his 11 year old son.
We caught lots of quality fish this 11 yr old boy was very talented
in his fishing mechanics and had a great spirit, and was very respectful.
He fished harder than lots of grown men that I fish with. This does not just
happen, his dad spends alot of time and effort to teach such a young boy
to be able to fish the way he does. He caught his fish on a Mann's baby minus
in a craw fish pattern. This bait is the best bait for young people, it is very easy to fish.
All you have to do is make long cast and wind it at a medium speed with a stop and go
retrieve, anybody can catch fish on this bait. The best supply of these baits can be
found at Walmart. We use 15lb Seaguar line it is invisible in the water and has no
memory to it, which makes it very easy to cast. After we got through fishing the early morning
bite, which we also caught quite a few fish on Top Waters. We went sight fishing, I have
been waiting for the main lake spawn to get in full swing. It is happening now. I have seen
more big fish and more numbers of spawning fish than I have seen all spring.
Now is the time to catch the fish of your dreams. We were fishing on the main lake
water clarity is excellent. Also caught most of our fish on Shaky heads with Tornado's
My clients had great compliments on the way your lodge is set up and how it accommodated
them, and your hospitality. They were disappointed that they didn't book ahead of time for
the 4 days that they were going to be there and had to seek other accommodations for the
reaming 2 days.

Today I fished with Vincent Lee and his dad from Hobbs, N.M.
We were fishing in Ince cove.
We were using Shaky Head jigs with Tormados attached to them.
We boated 28 fish from 1lb to 4.5lbs and our biggest fish was a
11lb 8oz bass. I was lucky to have a good net man, Great Job Vince!!!
The fish are in full blown spawn our bigger fish were caught in 10 ft to
14 ft of water. Now is the magic time of the year we have post spawn
fish, pre spawn fish, and spawning fish. Green pumpkin seed is still
the #1 color. We were also using motor oil power worms. The 11.8
was caught on one of my custom made Shaky Head jigs with a
tornado attached.

Captn Mike,
Today I fished with Kevin Dunn and his dad from Lubbock.
We started fishing at 7:30 am until 3:30.
We were fishing in Little Grape and on the main lake,
south side of the dam, we boated 31 fish, still again
on Shaky Heads with Tornado's. The fish were in
10 ft to 30 ft of water. The bite is absolutely crazy.
After I took them back to the dock, my brother
Danny Pool and I went out for approximately 2 hours.
We found a big school of pre spawn fish on the long
point in the mouth of Big Grape. We boated 12 fish,
the 5 biggest fish weighted 29 lbs. We were catching them
Carolina rigging, with motor oil power worms.

May is a magic month for Lake Alan Henry.
The fish are in post spawn and spawn.
The post spawn fish will be feeding heavily
to replenish their bodies, and the male bass
will still be hanging around the nest to protect
their fry. As the moon grows fuller the females will
move up again, they are cruising. "It's BIG FISH
TIME."
The Top Water bite is on and getting better everyday,
because the male bass are protecting their fry.
I like to use a Tiny Torpedo, fire tiger is the color.
I modify this bait by taking the back hook off and
putting a #3 Mustad treble hook on the front of the
bait, this makes the bait float at an up right angle
and the blade on the back slashes through the water
better and the bigger hook on the front gives you more
hook ups. When fishing the Top Water use monofilament
because it floats, and fluorocarbon sinks, and your bait
will perform better with monofilament. I use 17lb test for
my Top water baits, and 15lb test Seaguar Fluorocarbon.
for my Shaky Heads and Sink-O, buy the Inviz X,
( in the blue and yellow package) it spools up better
and has less abrasion, with no stretch giving you
a better hook set.
Folks don't forget the Buzz Bait, I like black,
also the Super Spook Knocker for the big fish cruising,
they will blast this bait.
I am still catching a lot of fish on Shaky Heads with
Grande Bass worms and Sink-o. My favorite color
is green pumpkin with black flake.

I was on the lake 5 days this week folks,  and fighting the @#%*! wind.
Thanks to my clients for their patients with the wind.
The bite is fantastic, we have boated over 250 fish in 5 days.
We are using the shaky head jig and sinkos in green pumpkin and black flake
is the go to color for the sinkos and shaky heads. Also we have been
catching some real nice fish on buzz baits early and late, black is the color
I took Good Friday off and went fishing with my brother Danny who is the lake
manager, we decided to spend our day site fishing, we had been out about 15
min. and found a real nice fish. I pitched in on the fish, and had tied a bad knot,
line broke...while I was retying my hook on. My brother, fish stealing Danny, flipped in
the bed on my fish and politly stole it, so in the pic of Danny he is holding a stolen
fish!!! The fish are moving up on the beds rapidly in anywhere from 6ft to 15ft of water
depending on water clarity. We saw alot of big fish, but with all the boat traffic and
wind we could not lock on to many of them, we had a great day. Now is the time to catch a fish of a lifetime, and the number bite is very high, May is still going to be the magic month.

on a plastic worm in 5.5 feet of water at about 3 in the afternoon. We

caught her. It wasn't all the fish we caught that day - but, it was her

I wish the &%$#(* wind would blow just a little harder the next time I go fishing. The wind blew over 40 miles an hour with sustained winds of 30 mph. We fished the main lake points where we could get out of the wind and in Ince Cove and managed to scratch out 28 boated fish. They were anywhere from 1lb to 4lbs. When the wind blows don't be afraid to go fishing on Lake Alan Henry, the wind makes the fish bite, because they don't spook as easy. So let the wind be your friend and fish in the windy spots. This summer you'll be praying for the wind.
I fished with Dallas Stevens from Denver City, Tx and had a great time despite the @#%+*& wind. Great trip Dallas!!!

04/13/11  Fishing continues to improve.   Capt'n Mike

I went fishing by myself Monday the 11th and fished from 10:30am to 7pm and caught about 30 bass with a white spinner bait.  I caught two with a jig. I saw a few beds with males on them but no females. I saw one female swimming around guessing it was well over ten pounds. I could never locate the fish so just kept fishing. My father and I went fishing at Lake O.h. ivie the first week of this month and the biggest we caught was five pounds. The lake was 27 feet low and didn't have much structure compared to lake Alan Henry. We have a beautiful lake and the fishing is awesome.

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Bill Glass of Floydada on 4-12-11, and we caught 22

Senkos and watermelon cream worms. We fished from about 7:30 a.m. to
2:45 p.m.

We only saw small buck bass on beds.

Today I fished with Vincent Lee and Robert Stevenson from Hobbs, N.M.
The wind was blowing 25 to 30 miles per hour while we fished, we boated 52 fish anywhere from 1/2lb to 5lbs, no giant fish, but some where hooked and never seen. Great job Vincent and Robert.
The major spawn has not hit but has started.  Every day that the moon grows fuller more fish move up. The big girls are on the move.  I'll give you a quick update of where the big fish are at.. starting at Big Grape, all the flats and shelves along the river side north side, Little Grape fish are on the east bank where all the points are and coves are, starting at the island all the way back to where it forks.  Main Lake the fish are in 12 to 18 ft of water, Mid Lake, west of boat ramp, you don't have to go very far, starting at the NO WAKE zone, on both sides of the lake, on the flats and the points. Across from Rocky Creek where the main point is on the north side, fish the whole north side which is approximately 2 miles of shoreline, these big fish like the depth and they like the color of the water, they don't spoke easy. Fish very SLOW. Early morning fish in the clear water I recommend that you fish with a Magnum Spook. In the semi stained water throw BUZZ BAITS, this is an early morning pattern, you will catch the BIG CRUSING FEMALES. After 9:00 am I am catching my fish on shaky head jigs and sink-o worms.
I caught my ShareLunker on April 18th this fish had been caught 2 years in a row before I caught her, during the same week, the same month, and almost the same day each year, I was the 3rd one to catch this fish. She and I set a State record that has not been broken yet.  The same fish has never been caught or turned into the program 3 years in a row.  This proves that the big fish will spawn at their given time and that the ShareLunker program works and is very productive.
The spawn will continue through the 2nd week in June (FULL MOON). It looks like the month of MAY, will be the best month for Alan Henry for spawning fish and post spawn fish. You could probably fall into the water and come out with one in your pocket.
I'm Phillip Pool and I'm Gone Fish'n.

04/10/11  Looks like a good week ahead,  bass should really start to turn on this week.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Richard Briant for Hobbs, NM, on 4-9-11. The wind
really was blowing bad. We managed to catch 13 fish. We caught three
crappie fishing with plastic worms, but the crappie liked them. The
largest crappie weighed 1 lb. 15 ozs. The largest bass weighed about
2 3/4 lbs. The largest bass of the day pulled off the lure at the
boat. We both whined for a while.

Thank you,

Capt'n Mike,

My brother, Boyd, and I were at the lake all week. I had to put a
new bilge pump on the boat before we could leave Lubbock. A very
cold job with it drizzling rain and low temperature. The high
temperature on monday was 50 something. Monday night the heater on
his travel trailer went out, and the temp really dropped. Tuesday we
headed his trailer to Lubbock to get the heater fixed. We got back
to the lake around 2 p.m., and the temperature was 39 degrees so we
didn't get on the lake.

On wednesday we caught 9 bass with the largest going around 3 lbs.
Boyd lost a big bass when it jumped and threw the hook.

On thursday we again caught 9 bass with the largest going 3 lbs, and
again the wind blew out of the north.

Friday was a pretty day, but the wind was still out of the north.
The fish we caught were mostly deep.

I could not believe that we could choose such a bad week to spend at
the lake, but we had lots of fun.

Although there were very high winds today, the bite is absolutely unbelievable. Gone Fish'n Guide Service,  caught over 50 fish between 2 people in 6 hours. Nothing to write home to mama about but, alot of fish from 1.5 lbs to 4 lbs. The fish were in 8 ft  to 15 ft. of water and the larger females are staged in 18 ft to 25 ft of water. These fish are on the spawning flats. We were catching them on shaky heads with a sinko worms attached.
The fishing just gets better every day, and as the moon grows fuller the big fish will move up in waves.  A personal friend of mine Ross Rushing, caught a bass this week that weighted over 10lbs, Great Job Ross! I had another life long friend fishing in his boat next to me, and his girlfriend Debbie, had rod, reel, line, and bait jerked out of her hands and into the lake it went, with the fish, to bad so sad, Lance.  This is a pre spawn bite and is absolutely crazy. Steve and I fished Wednesday and Thursday. We had very good luck fishing three inch Gulp minnows with a 1/8 oz weight along the banks. We were catching spotted bass about 5-10 foot deep, largest was 17 inches.
Steve fished Wednesday night on the barge with minnows and caught 14 crappie. Water temp 58 degrees.

03/23/11  Next few days should turn on some good fishing.   Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Ray and Alex Oguinn on 3-22-11 of Las Cruces, NM, on a
very windy day. I think some of the wind was around 50 miles per
hour. We had to fish where we could, but we managed to boat 10 bass
up to about 2 3/4 pounds on Crawdad Candy colored worms.

Even with the wind, we had a great time.

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Jarrod Hutchinson and Ric Baccus of Midland on 3-21-11
on a slighty windy day. We caught 20 bass with the largest two going
6 lbs. 8 ozs. and 4 lbs. We had others around 3 lbs.

03/21/11   Well it looks as though some of the bass are starting to spawn.  Capt'n Mike

My father and I went fishing on Saturday the 19th and caught a total of six fish. I caught  two largemouths on beds and this one weighed 8.2 pounds and caught another one that weighed  6.5 pounds. Released both fish so they can finish with their spawning.

Capt. Mike,

Enjoy the fishing report. Thanks for keeping it current. Just a quick
question. Is it possible to ask posters to provide a little more detailed
report?  I like the "story style" reports, and a lot of times people provide
depths, water temps, and style of baits, but rarely do they specify color,
size, or presentation. Not asking for people to give up their locations, but
a more detailed report would sure be helpful for us who travel long
distances to fish A.H.  Just a question. Thanks in advance.

03/20/11  The cold front kinda turned them off,  but today should warm it back up.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Megan, Unice, Matt, and Craig Lawlis and Triston Woods
of Amarillo on 3-15-11. We caught 24 fish with several of the fish
being crappie. Most were bass with the largest two going around 3
lbs. We caught these cappie while we were trying to catch bass.

It was a beatiful day without much wind. This was a fun bunch to
fish with. We fished from two boats.

We caught all the fish on crank baits. The water temperature was
from 54 to 62.3 degrees.

03/15/11  A little cool this morning but it will warm up the next couple of days, should improve the bite.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

Since I hadn't fish on Alan Henry for about 1 1/2 weeks, I fished
for about 6 1/2 hours by myself. I caught 7 bass and lost 4 more
because they were hitting very soft on crankbaits. I don't think the
north wind helped very much. I blew out of the north the whole time
I was on the water. I found the water temperature from 52 to 57.1
degrees.

I have been gone to central Texas to help friends do some plumbing
because their pipes froze and burst in all the cold weather we had.
We went fishing in their ranch lake, and the fishing was something
else. Two of us fished for about 1 1/2 hours, and caught around 50
bass. Several weighed a little over 3 lbs. This was some fun.

03/12/11  Nothing like catching a big one.  Capt'n MIke

Cpt. Mike....,, My daughter Amber and I fished for about four hours, on 03/11/11. We caught three fish,,,,3 lbs Kentucky Spot, a 5 lbs Black and this 10 lbs 10 oz beauty....All were on same secondary break line brush pile...one on Crank bait, and two on Large Spinner bait.  Looks like the Spawn is close. Water Temp was in 55 to 58 range....

03/04/11   I think it is just about crappie time.  Capt'n Mike

Steve and I fished Tuesday and Wednesday. We caught several nice crappie and bass up the river where the high lines cross. Tuesday night there was a lady from Midland that showed all of us guys how to catch crappie off the barge. We saw water temperatures from 54-58. Some of the crappie we cleaned had eggs.

03/02/11  It slow down Sunday with the wind howling, but the warm day are making it happen.   Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Franscois Burger of Lubbock on 3-2-11, and we caught
16 bass up to 3 lbs. 2 ozs. The smaller bass are really starting to
move up, but the larger bass are still hiding.

The water temperature was 49 to 57.9 degrees. We caught the bass on
crank baits and worms.

02/28/11  Good few days of fishing, time to get the boat out.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Gaines Butman of Lubbock, and his brother, Chance,
from Dumas, TX. on 2-26-11. We caught 9 fish with the largest going
7 lbs. 13 ozs. The only catch to this is that the largest fish was a
freshwater Drum. We caught fish on jigs, lizzards, and crank baits.
The Drum hit a jig, and of course, we thought we had a big bass on
the line. I wished I would have remembered to enter the Drum as a
lake record since Alan Henry doesn't have one yet. My bad.

02/27/11  Well when I start getting fishing reports on a daily  basis, fishing must be turning on.  Reports of Crappie in the shallows.  Capt'n Mike

Had a good day on the lake.  We caught 7 bass and 12 crappie. Had a couple of the crappie go 15". None of our bass went over 2 lbs but we were mainly fishing for crappie using minnows.  Had a lot of fun hope the weather holds to keep the fishing good.

02/25/11 This is second fishing report today, looks like a good weekend coming up, go fishing. Capt'n Mike

Fished 2-25-10 and had a very productive day at the lake, but not on my pocket book.  I only got to fish from 7a-10a due to a dead starting battery and broke trolling motor foot control.  For the good news I caught 17 bass total with 4 over 18inches.  The one on the left was 8-12 and on the right was 8-0.  I also had a 3.5 and 2.92 spot but my camera would not cooperate to get another pic.

02/26/11  Fishing good according to A C Harris with a 30# Blue and some real nice crappie up to 2.15#.  Capt'n Mike

02/25/11  Fishing is turning around with warm weather.  Capt'n Mike

Mike

My name is Lonny Nelson and me and my wife Kathryn and our friends James Munday and Briony Lynne went fishing on Sunday the 20th.  We caught 11 fish later in the evening about an hour before dark.  We mainly caught crappie but also a few bass.  I have attached some pictures.  Thanks you for all of your updates on the fishing report, I think I check it almost daily.

Thanks
Lonny Nelson

02/23/11  The weekend seems to be setting up as a good one,  lot of activity fishing.  It's still winter but I will take the good weather.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Marty Foust of Sweetwater, TX on 2-22-11, and we
caught 21 bass up the over 3 lbs. It was a very pretty day. Not much
wind, and we found the water temperature going from 49 to 55.4
degrees.

Every one seems to forget that it's still winter time, but the bass
have really been co-operating.

02/21/11  There was an 8# black caught this weekend, seems everyone caught something, including crappie.  Capt'n Mike

02/20/11  Thing sure are warming up in a hurry,  it's about time.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Joe Bartlett of Lubbock on 2-19-11, and we caught 14
bass up to 6 lbs. 11 ozs. on worms and crank baits. Since the big
cold spell, the water is really warming up. We found the water
temperature to be from 48 to 59.9 degrees. Most of the fish we
caught were in the 52 to 54 degrees water.

If we get several really warm days in a row, I think the bass will
really turn on.

01/30/11  Pretty decent weather this week, but it's going to get cold next week.   Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Tommy Arenivas of Odessa on 1-29-11 on a nice warm
day. We caught 8 bass up to about 2 1/2 lbs., but we spent a big
part of the day looking around the lake. We think we could have put
more bass in the boat if we had really fished hard.

It was really fun fishing with a good fisherman like Tommy. We
caught the fish on worms, spinner baits, and crank baits. Most on
worms. We found the water temperature from 46.4 to 52.5 degrees. We
caught most of the bass in the warmer water.

01/27/11  The lake is down several ft but that should make the spring fishing better.   Capt'n Mike

Capt't Mike,

I fished with Dee and Lee Roy Rehor of Joes, Colorado on 1-26-11 on
very beautiful day to be on the water for January. The air
temperature was in the mid 50's, and the water temperature was from
46.4 to 52.5 degrees. We caught our bass where we found the warmest
water. We had a very light north wind that morning, and no wind at
all in the afternoon. We never got a bite that morning, but we
managed to put 4 bass in the boat in the afternoon with Lee Roy
catching a Spotted bass over 18" long and weighing nearly 3 lbs.

01/18/11  Pretty days are worth fishing anyhow.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with my brother, Boyd, and Reese McBroom on 1-17-11 on a
very beautiful day. Before noon, Boyd caught a 2 lb. bass, and I
lost a fish that we never got to see. Late that afternoon, Reese and
I had two fish at the same time to the boat. These are the only
bites we received all day. The weather was beautiful with hardly any
wind, sunny, and warm. We went to the lake knowing that we probably
would not catch to many fish in the cold water of winter. We're
waiting for the water to warm up, or we just can't stand to not be
on the water before we go again.

We found the water temperature from 47.5 degrees to 52.3 degrees.

01/17/11  Man this is the way to start the year off, way to go Eric.   Capt'n MIke

On Saturday 1/15/11 Eric Atkins landed a 5.62 Spotted bass breaking an almost 45 year old State record. The bass still has to pass a DNA test to make it official.

PS this page will change soon to 2011 fishing report

Capt'n Mike,

I fished with Steve Beasley on 12-30-10, and we caught 6 bass with
the largest going over 3 lbs. We caught them on crank baits.

The water temperature was 49 to 52 degrees. The lake is really
cooling down now, and with the front coming in today it will
probably be even colder. I think winter is here.
