Subject: Lake temp

I was there yesterday and the lake temp was 54.8 and the fishing was great. The fish are still hitting in the shallows on a carolina rigged worm. And I even caught a few on top water baits early in the morning. Like I said the fishing is great if you can stand the cold. I love it, I of cource can fish all year long in any kind of weather. lol

Thanks

11/28/06  Good fish being caught, might be time to go.  Capt'n Mike

10 1/2 lb large mouth bass at crappie dock  caught by Taylor Stewart age 10  on 11/20/06

We had a great few days of fishing, caught a few 4-6 lb bass and alot of crappie some big ones 2.75 lbs none under 1.79 lbs.

Thanks Billy Guetersloh

11/26/06  Good reports coming in this weekend, a 12 and a 8 have been caught.  Most active on spinner baits.. Capt'n Mike
11/09/06   Well you bought it or you're paying for it, why not use it, yeh it's time to get the boat out and go fishing.  Water temp is right where it needs to be, the top water should be turning on with these nice days we are having.  Capt'n Mike
11/03/06  Water is getting cooler and the bass bite is picking up, crappie are in the shallows some good ones being caught.  Capt'n Mike

Mike the bass are in fall pattern right now. Keep the reaction strike up. I have had 2 great weekends in a row. Here is a picture one of several 8s caught . She got tore up bad and we had to keep her but the rest got turned loose. The bite is in the 12 to 20 foot range on the ledges in the creeks. Crank baits, swimming jigs have been hitting good after the sun gets up.

10/25/06  Lake is still murky from the rain, but the temp is falling.  The crappie are biting in the shallows.  Capt'n Mike

Hiya!!

Went fishing just today...was one of the few boats out....was terrible early but later in the afternoon we decided to try some crank baits by the dam...was a great idea too...caught 11 fish in about 3 hours...smallest was a couple of pounds the biggest was just under 4....fish were suspended at about 10-15ft all caught on shad colored cranks

Jerry Smith

10/20/06  The same person who found the bass yesterday, found bass feeding up the Brazos in muddy 1ft water.  He said he was using a black and blue spinner with a gold blade.  He said the fish were around the sage that was in the water.  Capt'n Mike

10/19/06  Finally some good fish being caught, they were caught on main body of water on watermelon color grubs.  They were being worked from bank 5ft to 20ft down.  The longer you let the cast set,  the better the bite.  Slow, slow, slow was the best way to work them.  Capt'n Mike

10/16/06  The lake is catching a lot of water, it is 5ft at present over 2220 which is full.  The water temp is about 69*but the fish have yet to respond.  It will not be long though.  Should be some good top water fishing when they start.  The Benefit Tournament at Grubs was a great success, with 59 entries.  Here are the results based on five fish stinger. Capt'n Mike
  1. Rick Williams 11.0
  2. Dave Kuntz 8.14
  3. Mike Hines 6.22
  4. Jeff Cloud  5.83

Thanks to all of the Sponsors and Fishermen who made this possible and especially to Delton, Brenda and John.

10/12/06  Should be a good weekend, the lake caught water from the rain Monday night.  That has dropped the temp to 69* which means they should be turning on.    Capt'n Mile

10/05/06 It's not there yet folks, that is the temp as well as the fishing.  Only a few small bass reported.  Some good catfishing and crappie fishing going on.  Capt'n Mike

09/18/06 The temp is falling will not be long till fishing time.  The recent rains have really lover the temp.  Capt'n Mike

0909/05/06  What a labor day, it rain all weekend and Monday, but the fishing was great read the following.  Capt'n Mike

September 4, 2006

Thank goodness the heat is over.  Welcoming fall fishing, with the cold fronts and hurricanes that came in the water temp has dropped at least 10 degrees. This has put the fish on a good Top Water bite. I personally love a white buzzbait. I can cover alot of water and fish it at different speeds.
The fish will tell you how fast or how slow to fish the bait by their reaction.
Folks keep your Sinkos wet.  I'm catching fish on Sinkos anywhere from 5 to 15 foot deep on the edge of the grass lines. My favorite Sinko is the 5" Wacky Stick made by Creme and the color is Christmas Tree. They have these at the local Academy Sports & Outdoor store.
Fall fishing is going to get better by the week, because the days are getting shorter and the water temp is dropping, this means the fish will be moving up out of the deeper water.
Until next time, keep on buzzin the Buzzbait and sinkin the Sinko. I am now booking fall trip full days and half days. I also have hunting trip available for Dove, Turkey, Quail, Hogs, and Deer. If you would like a combination trip (Hunting and Fishing) just give me a call.

09-03-06 AND 09-04-06   Ten boats on the lake,  how often does that happen on Labor Day?   Water temp was-- warmer than the rain!!!!  The lake looked to be at pool level but if not,  it should be running over the spillway soon.  Sand Creek and the lower Brazos were gushing under the highway.  Fishing was as good as it gets.  Take your choice on lures because it all worked.  I through buzz baits, jigs, topwater, cranks, spinner baits, and I caught fish all day at all depths.  And I managed to get into a school for about half an hour before the rain got to hard to for them to surface.  The only true patten was that the bigger fish seemed to come from deeper water.

One word of caution though!!!!!!  With all the rain,  there are many rocks/mud falling in from the bank so be wise.

08/31/06  The shad are schooling, now is the time to fish right in the middle of the schools, small tubes etc, let them fall slowly.  That should produce some bass.  The crappie and catfish are starting to pick up at night.  Capt'n Mike

08/20/06  There is a little increase in catch on bass but not much.  Most all has been worming, some trolling but not much top water.  The catfish have been real good at night as well as crappie under lights.  Capt'n Mike  PS my hats off to JR

Summertime fishing is great at Lake Alan Henry. We are catching our fish off the main lake points and off the ledges. We are using 10" Power Worms, Motor Oil is the color. I am also catching a large quanity of fish from 2 to 4 lbs with an occasional giant mixed in. Look at the pic of Ronnie Kenmoore with his 2 big fish a 9lbs and 5lbs, these fish were caught within 30mins. of each other.
Come let us take you fishing out of our brand New 2006,  21' Stratos with the New 225 E-Tech Evinrude, with the Lowrance colored graphs.
Let me show you how to fish my new secret weapon. I will teach you how to fish a bait that you have never seen before. It is truly a secret way of fishing Lake Alan Henry. My self and my client caught 32 fish using this method in 2-1/2 hours.

07/12/04  We got about an 1" of rain last night but the fishing has still been good this morning, they seem to be right at the edge of the deep water usually in about 25ft to35ft water.  Top water early morning and late afternoon seems to be working too, but the big ones have been deep.  Capt'n Mike

07/10/06  Well this lake never quits on bass, this week several good fish up to 12# were caught.  The fish are deep in about  25 to 35 foot water.  Plastic worms motor oil color with gold flecks are what worked this past week.  The crappie are at night ant the catfishing is good.  Capt'n Mike

07/03/06  It's been hot but not that hot this week.  The bass have responded to the break in tempeture, with several caught in the 10# range.  The catfishing has been real good, especially on trotline.  The crappie have been picky as usual, with night fishing proving to be the best.  There was a lot of boat traffic this past weekend, with most of it being skiers.  The lake is full and very beautiful, how lucky we are to have such a great lake in West Texas.  Capt'n Mike

06/05/06  It is sure warming up.  The bass are going deeper during the heat of the day, and coming up in the early morning and evening for a  top water bite.  The crappie are hard to find especially the keepers.  The catfishing had been good with the new water.  Capt'n Mike

Your web page is awesome!  Thanks for the work you put in it.  Top water was
great this weekend.   Kept a Chrome PopR tied on all weekend.   Caught alot
in the shallows in the early morning, and late evening.   I boated a 7+
pounder early Sat. morning up gobbler creek.   She was still spawning, so
she went back!   Gotta love catch and release!

Fishing is great on Lake Alan Henry. Catching alot of big fish on Top water baits. Folks keep that Sinko wet they love it big time.  We are currently boating 30 to 50 fish a day, plenty of quality fish. several big fish from 7 to 10 lbs. Now is the time to plan the Night Fishing trips to beat the heat and the boat traffic. I have several openings for June and July, don't miss out on the summer time TOP WATER bite.

The bass are in postspawn, which means they are a little harder to catch if
your fishing in the wrong place.  TIP..move away from that shallow shoreline and
fish that deeper water... its a finesse presentation. Im booking early morning trips
right now so I can put you on that topwater action. Its nice and cool and the
bass want to pull hooks off of lures in those early hours. I dont keep you out there in the heat to burn like a potato chip. I only charge you for half the day.
                                                When you go with me,
all you have to do is step on the boat , the lures are tied on the rods ..the cooler is iced down with drinks and snacks . I take you right to it.  Im licensed and carry

Hi Mike,
My fishing friend, Jimmy Townsend of Lubbock, caught this 9Lb. 8 Oz. Black Bass Thursday, May 25, around 8:00 AM
A Pearl Bass Assassin did the trick.  Jimmy needed some fish for a fishfry for some friends, but after a short conversation
about " Motherhood " and " Babies "we released her for another day!

A new wave of spawning fish is coming in on the next full moon cycle, 3 days before and 3 days after full moon. We had a great week last week, with a 8lb9oz boated, 9lb11oz, 10lb14oz, 10lb15oz, and 12lb4oz. Lots of real big spotted bass.
We are catching our fish on Sinkos and Whacky Worms, I personally love the Creme Whacky Stick. We caught the 9-11 and the 10-15 on the Whacky Stick fishing Sinko style. Good news folks the Top Water bite is on..and it will get better and better. Go ahead and break out those hard Jerk baits the post spawn fish love to smash them. Right now we have 3 different stages of fish, pre spawn, spawn, and post spawn. I think right now you could fall in the water and come out with a fish in your pocket. Would love to take you fishing and show you how to catch the big fish. Call me for available dates. Take a look at these pics, these photos are only 5 days old.
We'll have fish on bed until the middle of June because our spawn was so late this year. You have to know where they are at, they are deep.
Until next time, I'm Phillip Pool and I'm Gone Fish'n.

05/18/06  Lots of big fish caught yesterday, it was still and clear and you could still see fish on the beds.  Water temp was 69*. Lot of bass in the 10# range still being caught.  Capt'n Mike

Hello Capt. Mike,

Here's a picture from Alan Henry on May 18.  Some fish are still on the beds.  Lake is clear on main body and murky in upper creeks.  Water temp ranged anywhere from 65 to 71 depending on where we were at.   The fish in the picture is full of eggs and was caught in about 8 feet of water at 4:45 p.m. in a main lake cove.  We were not site fishing when she was caught due to the chop on the water as the wind was picking up.  We didn't have our scales in the boat, but we guessed she weighed around 9 pounds or so.  We took a picture of her and safely returned her to the water.  Just a reminder that everybody should practice catch and release during the spawning season.  Also, observe friendly boating manners as the lake is sure to be crowded as a holiday weekend approaches.

I caught this bass on May 11, 2006 at approximately 8:00 am.  It weighted 11 pounds and was about 24 inches long.

Fishing report from April 28, 2006

It was my first trip to Lake Alan Henry, and I booked a day on the lake with guide Phillip Pool.  I had heard good things about the lake but didn't know what to expect, but, by day's end, I had boated the biggest bass of my life - it went 10lbs 14ozs, 25" long with a 19" girth.  If you want to catch a fish of a lifetime, I would highly recommend Phillip as a guide. He knows his lake.  I have been bass fishing for 30 years, but Phillip still managed to teach me a few things. If you decide to give Phillip a try just listen close to his advice and the fish will do the rest. Thanks Phillip for a great day on the lake.

Mike ... I just got the following from Texas Dept Wildlife:

Thursday afternoon at approximately 2 p.m., the Texas Wildlife Department will return six Budweiser ShareLunkers to Lake Alan Henry, including a 15-pound lake record largemouth bass caught by Billy Greeson of Amarillo on March 31.

Budweiser ShareLunker program manager David Campbell and Inland Fisheries district biologist Charlie Munger will be available for interviews.

For the second year in a row, Lake Alan Henry contributed nine Budweiser ShareLunkers this past season, the most of any lake in Texas. For information on the season’s entries as well as the overall program, please go to http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/visitorcenters/tffc/budsharelunker/.

The Budweiser ShareLunker program uses the large females for spawning, and the resulting fingerlings are stocked into public waters to improve the quality of fishing.

05/08/06  The crappie have been good at the crappie house at night, the bass were so so, because of the cloud cover.  With friday nights storm it good to be alive.  It got pretty hairy down here.  My good friend Mac McConnell was injured when a Tornado picked up his trailer, him and his dog up and tore it apart.  Any one wanting to help Mac, can send donations to me at Mike Burk for Mac, box 111, Justiceburg Texas 79373 and I will see he gets it.  What a good fisherman, good guy and friend, he lost everything.  Capt'n Mike

Just thought I'd send a picture of this fish I caught on Sunday. Caught her on a green trick worm off the main lake, don't know her weight, but she was a lot bigger than the 8.12 I caught thurs.  I put her right back in. Great lake.
practice catch and release,
Jonathan Johns

05/01/06  I sure warming up, been windy all weekend.  Real hard to site fish with this wind.  Still bass being caught on beds.  The crappie are small that are being caught.  Capt'n Mike

Here is a crappie that my son Trey (5) caught on a live minnow in Big Grape.  It weighed 2.14 ounces.  The fishing has been great.

Tory Stephens

Hey Mike,
The fish are biting and its a great time to take the children and get them
hooked on fishing. We caught many little bucks and my boy Riley caught this
hawg.
Fuzz

We braved the crowd and the wind on Sunday and it paid off. I caught this 12.48 at 10:45 A.M in the mouth of Little Grape. She took an 8 inch black zoom lizard. My friend Andrew Reese netted her for me. It has been a great week out on Alan Henry. I dont know any other lake where you can two 12 pound fish in back to back days of fishing.

Good fishing,
Brennen Teel

Here is some pictures of the fish that we caught on 4-24-06
on Beds at Alan Henry.

04/27/06  Its been a tuff we on site fishing seems the wind and clouds are taking care of the lake.  There are still some big ones being caught.  This is the only lake in Texas that you can catch a 10#er and be disappointed.  During the first of May when we start getting the thunderstorms fishing usually is very good.  Seems that it has been a good week for Mr. Teel.  Capt'n Mike

Mike I caught this fish yesterday on a black 8 inch worm. She wieghed 12.04. It took about a hour to catch her.

Good fishing,
Brennen Teel

04/27/06  Still catching bedded fish, several report of 10#ers but no sharelunkers yet this week.  Capt'n Mike

Kyle kulig caught this 9.3 yesterday. I think we tossed 11 different soft plastics at her. She finally took a sour grape ring fry. Lots of big fish were on the beds yesterday.

Thanks
Brennen Teel

04/24/06 Number 9 sharelunker was caught today, by Curtis Norrod.  They just keep comming.  Capt'n Mike

Was @ the Lake over Easter weekend and had an great time sight
fishing.  Did not
catch anything over 5lbs but we caught good numbers of fish.  Had a trailer
misshap on Sunday in
the boat ramp parking lot, but with the nice people @ Grubs letting me take
all the parts they had without
paying until I knew which part I needed to get the problem fixed then
settling the bill later.

I would have never gotten on the road and back home if it was not for Rick
Browning that man was great,
I was @ grubs getting the parts and he overheard me talking about my
problem and said he had tools
and would be their to help me when he finished his great lunch @ Grubs.
Rick and his friend (forgot his name, from the dallas area) are great people
and just wanted everyone out their to know their are great people and great
businesses still!

THANK YOU GRUBS & RICK BROWNING and FRIEND

Mike,

Sunday was great! No double digits but caught one 8#,two 7#'s,one 6# and a
41/2#,
Several 2-3#'s and best of all on topwater bite.
J.L.

Capt Mike,

Just wanted to thank Rick Browning for coming down a second year and enjoying the lake and releasing their catch again this year.  It is visitors like Rick that will help this lake continue to produce.  I am sure there are others that are practicing CPR and have not posted anything.   A big thanks to all of those sportsmen too!

Now if I could just get to the lake!

<<Untitled-2.jpg>>  Capt Mike,
Rick here again from Ohio, I sent pics last year of a 12lber I
caught and released at Alan Henry, well you couldn't keep us away this
year, here is a pic that shows some of our better cataches over the last
week and a few days, there is 1-10.01, 3-over 9, 2- over 8, and
obviously a good bunch of 4's,5's, and 6's, etc.... Alan Henry sure
makes for a great fishing trip, was really hoping to top the 12 lber
from last year but I guess I can't complain.

All fish were released alive back into the lake to be caught and
released again. I would like to say thanks to the folks at Grubs for the
great meals and hospitality, they are a great bunch to visit with. Hope
to report again next year if diesel prices don't keep going up, don't
know how long I can justify 800.00 in fuel to catch fish, hopefully for
ever. Thanks for a great lake I hope Alan Henry stays productive for
allot of years to come.

Rick Browning

04/23/06  Amistad and Lake Fork read'em and weep, by the time they post the 4 lunkers caught this past week, which makes 8  for the year.  Lake Alan Henry put every lake in Texas in it's dust or should I say wake.  By next week I predict it will be 12.   Folks we are just getting into the best part of the spawn.  No other lake can compare.  Capt'n Mike  Share lunker program

04/22/06  Four sharelunkers have been caught in the past week out of this lake. The fishing is unbelievable.  This lake truly has the biggest bass in Texas.  Capt'n Mike

MIKE HERE IS A PICTURE OF THE SHARE LUNKER I CAUGHT ON TUESDAY. A DREAM COME TRUE. CAUGHT HER ON A WHITE 4" MAD MAN CRAW WORM, IN THE MOUTH OF BIG GRAPE. THANKS TO THE GUYS AT GRUBS AND TO DAVID AT THE TP&W FOR TAKEN GOOD CARE OF HER. SHE WAS 25.75 LONG AND 20.75 GIRTH 13.43 POUNDS..

04/20/06  Only one Sharelunker caught yesterday, whoa!  We are get a rain today so site fishing is off, but still plenty of fish being caught.  Catch and Release or put in the sharelunker program.  Capt'n Mike

Fishing is great!!! The jerk bait bite is starting up and we are catching fish early in the morning, and going to the beds when the sun rises high enough to see the fish on thier beds. There is nothing like sight fishing, it will really get your heart pumping to watch a GIANT bass swallow your bait right before your eyes. I have a raised platform so that you can clearly see the fish in action. The spawn is about 3 weeks late, due to slow rise in water temperature. The month of May is going have more big fish on the beds than April.  So far as of today there have been 5 share lunkers turned into the program, and there are many more to come.
I still have open dates for May, give me a call and I will put you on some heart pumping big bass action. Who knows you could be next to catch a Share Lunker.
Here are some pics of some bass that we have boated in the last couple of weeks.

04/19/06  The big ones just keep coming in, yesterday I know of one 13# and several around the 11# range that were caught.  There are many more being seen but not caught and I do not here everything.  My complements to the fishermen who catch a big one, take it's picture and put it back on the bed.  You are the ones that make this lake great.  Capt'n Mike

04/14/06  Yesterday, the big one's came back, there were two 12# and a 13# lunker caught.  This weekend should be a good one.  Also some big crappie are being caught.  All of the big bass were caught on beds.  Capt'n Mike

My friend Cole caught this one today it was 10.11.  There were some other big fish on beds but they just were not holding.  He caught his on a six inch white lizard.

Ok Everybody,
My son put it to me today, this is his biggest bass so far a 6.2 pounder, he also caught a couple more 3.5 pounders and some other smaller ones. I did manage to catch a few , but not like this. We had a great time together............................MARK

we braved the wind today (04-15-06) and found a NICE!!! Bass on a main lake point near the mouth of Big Grape it weighed 12.80 and the male weigh 4.37 the water temp was around 64 we also found water that was 68 to 70 in Gobbler sorry that I don't have any pictures downloaded yet

Mike,

I was at Grubs when the 12.85 & 13.05 were brought in on Thursday.  It is hard to believe that bass can get that big and harder to believe that two guys in one boat could each catch the fish of a life time.  One was caught on a water-dog and took over an hour of work before she would bite.  The other fish was caught on a plastic lizard and hit it only seconds after he dropped it in front of her nose.  It was a treat to see the fruit of this lake.

Hi Mike, this crappie was caught on Saturday 04-08 while fishing for Bass.  It was 16 inches and weighed 2.18 lbs.

04/03/06  Ready set go fishing, it is time folks, the first news of bedding fish are coming in with a new lake record black bass caught this last week.  The record fish was caught by Billy Greeson it weighed in at 15.04#, but in the past week there have been two 14#ers caught and several in the 11# range.  The fish were caught on wide range of bait so that means they are biting.  One friend went yesterday and said "that definitely the spawn was on" landing a 10,8, and 6 pounder.  The crappie are biting some bass lures so that tells me they are getting more aggressive now.  This coming weekend should be great, the Sun County Bass tournament is this weekend, which is out of Albuquerque, and last year's winner boated a whopping 73#s on 2 day ten fish limit, will be right on the money again this year.  Don't quit your job to go fishing but you might think about it.  Capt'n Mike

03/31/06  Well hot day yesterday and prediction of warm days ahead, by next weekend it should be great unless weather comes into play.   There have been several nice bass caught this week, including a 14#er released back into the lake.  There are some bass starting to come up but they are not holding on the nest yet.  It will be soon though.  The spawn is this lake is funny in that it will last to the end of May, as years past have proven.  The big fish was caught on a tube lure.  Capt'n Mike

03/28/06  For the most part the weather won last week, with the cold temp and winds, it really slowed the spawn.  It will take a warm week to get back to where we were.  There were still some fish caught though.  Most people are saying the temp has been around 54* last week.  Since yesterday was warm I will say it is around 57*now and should get warmer this week.  Still the white double bladed spinner worked slow off the bottom or tops of trees in about 10 to 15 ft. water was the ticket.  It is all changing day by day as the fish stage in prespawn.  Most Texas lakes are in spawn now but not this one it will be April as I predicted.  I think the real fishing will start next week unless we have another cold spell and will continue into May like the years past.  The crappie are still a little hard to find but improving.  Capt'n Mike

Very slow yesterday.  We went way up the river.  the water was 52.5 and the warmest we found was 54.  I threw spinners for quite a long time with no luck.   I caught a 2 #er on a watermelon red trick worm and a 4#1oz on a watermelon red brush hog.  My wife caught a 2#er on a  black crawdad with chartreuse claws. The wind was howling, and we fought the wind all day, so our brand new batter for the trolling motor ran out of juice.  Tyler Chadwick 03/27/06

We have had a crazy winter. First it was warm and the bass started to move up , then we have had a cold front that doesnt want to go away. The bass are ready to move up . This is what they call the staging  mode. All we need is about 7 or 8 days of 70 * weather and they will be all over the place. They will be hungry and chasing baits such as spinners...crankbaits...senkos. Then after a few days the males will start looking for a place to build a bed. The large females will not be far away. ....well thats another stage we are not at yet, I can fill yall in later on where they lay those eggs and how to catch them.  I have had a few cancellations due to the cold weather. Call soon and grab the best days before theyre gone. I have specials deals to fill in some weekend days.

Here is that 10.02 lbs.  I caught in Gobbler with my buddy from Kansas.
Kirby Horner
Guymon, OK

On 3/18/06 Friday morning about 7:30 before the front came in we stuck a 10#02ounce on a white jig in about 9 to 10 ft of water towards the mouth of gobbler,  on the outside edge of one of those bushes.  We also caught a couple more but didn't catch another fish after 10 am on Friday.  Saturday we picked up some fish, fishing the outside edge of bushes on the main lake, nothing big at all, everything on Saturday was on pumpkinseed tube jig, tx rigged really light. Sunday we almost drowned from all the rain and headed back to Kansas were we haven't seen rain in months there.  We also haven't seen any fishing either though

Thought I should report this fish caught 03/18/06. Weighed 10+ Caught it in submerged trees in 20' of water. Didn't have a partner!

03/20/06  The weather had everyone stumped this weekend. Lots of trying to catch the big one but no cigar. I should say it slowed the bass fishing down. Which everyone thought the full moon would help. The rain was much needed, it will put oxygen in the water which will make the fish more active. This past week the crappie fishing has sure picked up. Several reports of good catchs of crappie came in. Some thing most people in the area do not realize is that this lake is so clear you can sight fish it in the spring for black bass on the beds. This is something new for West Texas, since most of our lakes are brown and muddy color. When the sun is high and the wind dies down you take your special fishing sun glasses out and go fishing. If you have never done it what a thrill. See the bass before you catch it and watch it all the way into the boat. It takes a little skill, but you will get the hang of it. Remember the wind has to be still, maybe that is how the lake protects it's fish. How many days in March and April does the wind stop, not many. Water temp is coming up but needs to reach 60* before the fish really turn on. It can change any day but still a white spinner with big blades of silver or gold seems to be a stand by at this time. See ya fishin Capt'n Mike

Remember Catch and Release is the way to insure the future of good fishing especially when catch bedded bass.

03/12/06  Wind blew like hell today.  Best thing about it is there have been some real big fish caught the past few days, a 11# a 13# and a14#.  Nothing on the beds yet, still to cold.  The lake is showing some crappie action.  Capt'n Mike

03/07/06  Watch the temp it been hot today, numbers are changing.  Capt'n Mike

03/05/06  Sunday night just got back from the lake, most were singing the blues but a couple of fellows who fish the lake all the time said that it was a pretty good weekend with the big fish in the 5# range.  They also said that a 10#er had been caught on top water.  Lots of bugs flying around the lake.  On Feb.28 I killed a mosquito on my arm, that is very unusual for West Texas this time of year.  Top water fishing seems to follow the bugs.  The crappie seem to be improving.  There was several folks on the crappie house Sunday night.  That's a good sign, more folks mean more fish being caught.  If I were fishing these staging bass, I still think the white spinner big gold blade is good, but I might start throwing some top water and maybe a buzz bait and let it run under the water some.  Be lazy about it the fish still are.  Capt'n Mike email mburk@door.net

Capt'n Mike's points of interest on Lake Alan Henry.  To the right of the boat ramp up the first draw to the left, there is a live oak tree that three of us can barely get our hands around, what a tree.  The biggest I have seen in Garza County.

03/04/06 If we get a rain anytime soon this lake is going to turn on.  Water temp is still a little cold though.  Some nice fish being caught, but no lunkers yet.    Capt'n Mike

Bring your whole tackle box. We've caught fish on everything from Jerk baits, Wacky worms, Spinner baits, and Crank baits. The fish are staged and ready to go into full blown pre spawn. My graph is turning black with fish in 25 to 12 ft of water. Water temp on the main lake is holding steady at 50 degrees and up to 53 degrees in the back of the creeks. Everyday the fishing gets better and better. We are catching some real soild fish. Our best 2 fish this week were an 8lb 2oz caught on a Creme Wacky Worm watermelon and red, and 11lb 1oz caught on a crank bait. These 2 large fish were caught by my younger brother Danny Pool, lake manager. Great Job Danny!!
We still have plenty of opening for March thur May. Here are the pics of Danny and his fish. Danny will be my back up guide, so we have plenty of room for all our clients.  Danny and I work closely together so that we can give you the latest lake reports and offer you the best fishing tips for you to be able to enjoy your trips with us.
February 27, 2006 my clients Randy and Bob boated 14 fish on spinner baits from 2lbs to 6lbs.
Danny caught the 8lbs 2oz on February 28th and the 11lb 1oz on March 1st

03/03/06  Yesterday the fishermen were coming droves.  Why all the interest, the TP&W and Budwieser who  sponsors the program, sharelunker in Texas is offering $400 a pound for the 400th black bass over 13# caught in Texas.  The #398 was caught in Lake Fork recently.  Go get'em, it's to early for the spawn here but you might just get lucky.  Also, there was 15 1/2 inch crappie caught the other night off of the crappie house.  Capt'n Mike

02/23/06  The fish and fisherman are staging on the lake.  Who will catch the first big one this year you know it"s coming.  I will be updating more regular as the season gets into full swing.  Right now, it still winter, lake is cold but we are having a few real nice days.  That's the ticket, if you can fish on multiple days your chance's are better. Remember this lake is not very populated so lake break downs can become serious business, so be prepared.  Capt'n Mike  What a story below!

Mike,
Caught good numbers up in Gobbler on Wednesday largest was a 6# . Water stained 51degrees- working a 1oz white spinnerbait with #7gold colorado blade, slowwwww rolllllllllll. Witnessed something I have never seen on main lake with water temp of 45. As you know the weather was beautiful Wednesday, a large school of shad came up in the chanel in 60ft of water and soon after a school of very large bass attacked on the surface. These fish were in the 7-8# range. They never came up again!!! I've heard of this happening at Fork but I personally have never witnessed this in all of my years of fishing.
Talk about making your heart pump!

God Bless!
J.L

02/13/06  The bass are staging right now of the points and above the deep tree line.  Always on this lake bring you white spinner with gold blades and some kind of small minnow to work slow.  The was one !0#er caught last week.  Capt'n Mike

You have been dreaming all winter long about getting back on the water. Now is the time to catch the fish of your dreams.
The fish are currently biting crank baits like the DD14 and red is still the color of choice. We are also catching some big fish on spinner baits, I personally like a 1/2 ounce white with a single Indiana blade.  The key to fishing right now is to fish slow, slow, slow. One thing that helps me fish real slow is using a sinko type bait, I prefer the Wacky Stick made by Creme. The colors of choice on this bait are white, and watermelon/red flake. I also use lead inserts to get the bait to go deeper.
Now is the time to call or e-mail me to reserve your fishing trip dates for March, April and May. I still have plenty of multiple days open on the calendar, but the phone calls and e-mails are coming in daily. Just give us a call and we will be glad to help you with any accommodation needs you might have. We HIGHLY recommend Lake Alan Henry Lodge, The Roost and Grubs. These friendly people will be glad to accommodate all your lodging needs.

Mike,

I would like to thank all of the people who helped me out this las Sunday. I had an accident with a knife up in Gobbler and put a hole in my leg and into the artery. Needless to say I shortened my day early and went to Lubbock in an ambulance. Several local guys stayed to help my dad load my boat and make sure that everything was secured. Thank you to all who helped, it is greatly apreciated.

J.L.

Here's my good friend Marty Richter with his "Lake Record Spotted Bass" from lake Alan Henry. He caught it Saturday January 28, 2006. It weighed 4.28 pounds, had a length of 20 3/4" and a girth of 14". The state record is 5.56 pounds and has been held since 1966. I believe the next state record spotted will be caught from Alan Henry.............................MARK

01/12/06  This past weekend was pretty good.  Don't even think about going to this lake in the winter fishing for bass without a white spinner bait in your tackle.  It may not work always but it is the most active bait now.   Some report of fishing close to the bank and letting it fall, others say about 15ft water in the tops of trees is best.  Capt'n Mike

JANUARY 1, 2006

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE, WE'RE READY FOR A GREAT FISHING SEASON.
WHAT A SURPRISE, THE WINTER BITE HAS BEEN VERY GOOD.  FOR THE LAST 3 WEEKS WE HAVE BEEN CATCHING SOME REAL NICE, QUALITY FISH, FROM 2 TO 9 LBS. MY PATTERN HAS BEEN VERY PREDICTIABLE, WE'RE CATCHING BASS ON THE MAIN LAKE, ON THE FLATS, IN 20 TO 25 FT OF WATER. THE FISH ARE ACTUALLY SUSPENDED FROM 8 TO 12 FT.  WE ARE CATCHING THEM ON THE DD14 CRANK BAIT AND RED IS THE COLOR. I'M ALSO CATCHING BASS UP THE CREEKS ON SPINNER BAITS IN 4 TO 8 FT. OF WATER. I PREDICT THAT IN THE MONTH OF JANUARY A 13LB OR BETTER WILL BE CAUGHT.
IF THE WEATHER REMAINS MILD LIKE IT HAS BEEN WITHOUT THE COLD FRONTS OR THE WILD WINDS THE BASS WILL CONTINUE TO BITE BETTER AND BETTER. THE MID 60 AND 70 DEGREE WEATHER, EVEN AT THIS TIME OF YEAR MAKE IT VERY ENJOYABLE TO BE OUT ON THE WATER.
I AM BOOKING FOR CURRENT FISHING TRIPS, AND NOW IS WHEN YOU NEED TO BOOK YOUR TRIP FOR THE SPRING. THE DAYS ARE LIMITED, NOW IS A GOOD TIME TO GET YOUR CHOICE FOR THE BEST DAYS.  IF YOU NEED ANY HELP WITH ACCOMADATIONS WE WILL BE GLAD TO GIVE YOU THE INFO NEEDED TO MAKE YOUR TRIP COMFORTABLE AND PLEASANT. I'M AM ALSO BOOKING NOW FOR HOG HUNTS AND QUAIL HUNTS, AND WE HAVE WAY TO MANY HOGS.

I'M PHILLIP POOL AND I'M GONE FISH'N & HUNT'N

At the top of this report are the past 5 years history of fishing the lake.  This should be a great year.  Remember always Catch & Release.

Happy New Fishing Year, Best of Luck
