Fishing Report By Capt'n Mike and Friends gobler@caprock-spur.com

12/22/03 Not enough fishing going on to give a report, may be 10 boats in parking lot this weekend.  So everyone have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!!!!! Capt'n Mike

12/09/03  I talked to one fisherman who had caught a 10# bass last week before the front, but Sunday he caught only small ones.  That seemed to be the story for everyone.  Too cold today, burr.  Capt'n Mike

12/8/03 fished yesterday before the big cold front, caught 3 small bass and a 3 lb all on Texas rig worm in 3 to 10 ft. of water on sunny side of bank.

                            Mike R.

12/02/03  Not alot happening, best bets are crappie in the evenings and nights, with bass on white spinners in morning and evenings.  Capt'n Mike

Mike,                                                                                                          Back in  Grape Creek I caught a small bass about a foot long on a bomber crank bait last Sunday. Plenty of fish on the finder, guess they just were not interested.
Forrest Turner

11/24/03  At 8pm last night not a sole was on the lake, or there were no signs of it in the parking lot.  I bet the fish were biting.  A friend last week caught several nice fish up the river using white spinners in the shallows.  Stay Warm and have a great Thanksgiving.  Capt'n Mike

11/17/03  The water temp continues to fall, but only little ones were caught this weekend, with a 6# the biggest I heard caught.  The crappie continue to improve.  The bass are moving into the shallow water.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike,
This is Jody Haywood with his 11+ pound bass he caught during Hub City West Texas Anglers Club Tournament on 11-9-03 at Alan Henry

11/10/03 Best news yet, jerk baits are doing good, was at the boat ramp Sunday and the report was good for all day.  Water temp is 60* to 62*, its time to fish.  Capt'n Mike

                                                                                              64 *
The main lake is clear...everything else is stained

The bass have finally moved up to the edges and are chasing crankbaits.  There was an 11 lb. bass caught on a rattling rogue
sunday at the tournament held by Hub City West Texas Anglers.  Other bass were caught on edges with worms and flukes. These fish are healthy and fight hard.  Fishing is good...the key is to go between the fronts which are moving in every  3 to 4 days.
                                                                                 Its definitely not over.

11/03/03  Water temp is at 67* but that did not cut anything loose.  I believe the lake needs a rain or something, its sure been slow.  Capt'n Mike

10/27/03  Randy Truesdell, Community Services Director City of Lubbock , sent me this in response to an email about improvements on the lake.   Capt'n Mike

Hi Mike,
Community Services Director
The City Council was pleased with the Design Guidelines that were
presented last Thursday (10/23).  They gave us approval to move forward
as soon as possible with the construction of the restroom facility.  We
are in the process of developing the plans to construct the restrooms.
Our goal is to have that facility open next summer.

On another note, we received approval to remove the concrete dividers
on the boat ramp.  We will be replacing those with a plastic divider
that is six inches wide and 4 inches tall.  The sides of the plastic
dividers will be at a 45 degree angle to the boat ramp pavement. The
plastic dividers are on order and we will begin removing the concrete
dividers and placing the plastic ones as soon as they come in.

Let me know if you have any questions or need additional information.

Thanks,
Randy Truesdell

10/24/03  The temp continues to fall this weekend with the cold front coming in, may kick something off.  The weather calls for lows in the 30s on Sunday, and high winds today. Capt'n Mike

10/20/03  Well the weekend was pretty disappointing for most who fished the tournaments at the lake, all reporting an abundance of small fish.  The only bright spot, was the landing of a 13.14 # black bass caught on a tequila shad tx rigged worm with 14# test line on the crappie house. The fish was caught by Baldo Singleterry early Sunday morning.  .  Capt'n Mike

From Sunday 10-19-03
Captain Mike,
The monstor bass my son Keenan is holding (a little over 13 lbs.)  was caught by Baldo Singleterry standing behind the fish (I never got his name); casting a purple worm from the dock to the shore.  He donated her to the Share Lunker program, I sure hope she lived, she didn't look in too good of condition when we stopped back by the bait store on the way out to see her one last time.  We only caught a few small ones, but we were using a boat!!!! What else should we expect?
Ronnie Foy

10/17/03  A 6# was the best I heard of this week, petty slow,  maybe this nice weekend will produce.  Never bite for me when it's nice though, usually bad weather. Capt'n Mike

10/14/03  I was out of town this weekend, but JR sent in this temp and fishing report.  Maybe these 2 fronts we are having this week will shake something loose.  Capt'n Mike

* Bass are biting good !  They are still holding at 25--35 ft deep.... worms in natural colors are the key.....shake them in the trees and get ready to set the hook.  The bass are starting to fatten up for winter. dont miss out from now thru dec. call me !

* Crappie have moved up the creeks. Im catching them with 1/16 th ounce white curlytail grubs.

10/06/03  Nothing to brag about except for a 10# er report.  I think that there is just to many shad schooling right now, to much to eat.  That goes for everything, it will change middle to end of  the month.  Some one send me the current temperature.  Here are 2 different emails, I guess catching a 10# fish makes the increase in price easier to take.  Happy Fishing Capt'n Mike

10/04/03

My wife and I fished Saturday in the light rain and had a blast.  Caught this brute on a topwater popR (blue) .  We sure do enjoy this lake and have no problem with the fees.

10/01/03  This is an email from the Denver Bassmasters on there weekend at Lake Alan Henry.  It says alot about the lake and how far it popularity reaches, and is a good fishing report.  Capt'n Mike

From the Denver Bassmasters Newsletter.

(Mike, talked to you on the water while waiting to pull out, and your wife in the lot afterwards.)  Great site.  You can scale this down for your report as needed.

Lake Alan Henry, Texas, located approximately 600 miles from Denver, has got to be one of the best possible locations within a 600 mile circle and a nine hour drive.
The lake is managed as a trophy lake with an 18 inch minimum on three of the allowed 5 largemouth bass and on all smallmouth and spotted bass.  Although no big fish were landed at this tournament, I don't think you will find anyone who was there who will doubt that they exist in quantity.
Conditions were right (to keep the big fish hidden) this time, with clear water and
transitioning fish.  The larger fish were caught on practice day when foggy conditions
lasted until about ten o'clock.  But there were definitely numbers of fish available.

Lake Alan Henry
by Jeff Jones
Practice day started with fog and cooler temps.  The fog lasted until ten o'clock and the bass continued to hit topwater for the extended low light conditions.  When the sun finally pushed through, the topwater slowed considerably.
My practice day started with a popR fish on the fifth cast.  Then my partner had a 16 plus inch largemouth rocket up from deep, clear, and open water to bust his buzzbait.  We then had a long dry spell with only a popping frog bite just before the fog left.
We spent the rest of the day exploring the lake.  While not huge, there are a lot of cuts and several long coves to check out.  The main-lake is also very attractive with rocky, brush lined shores and mostly 45 degree banks.  Very clear water was the norm, but there was some muddy water up the river.  During the tournament, the upriver water became chocolate soup due to heavy rains on Thursday prior.  Many reported a better practice day than they had during the tournament and the largest fish caught during the trip was during practice.
On day one there was a local hourly Big Bass tournament with and estimated 40 boats.  I fished a flat for feeding bass with a Speas buzzbait, where I caught one 14.5 inch bass.  A little later, I got my 18.5 inch, 3.47 lb. largemouth in a nearby cove from the tops of deeper trees.  We then got several more of what we called the “under” fish with senkos while cruising the bank.
The regulations on this trophy lake allow 5 largemouth of which only two may be
under 18 inches (no minimum). All smallmouth and spotted bass must be over 18 inches.  While we all wanted bigger bass, finding the more numerous “under” 18 inch bass would be much easier.  The club imposed a 12 inch minimum to avoid the Lake Meredith example of bringing 5 inch fish to the weigh-in.
We discovered that there were numbers of bass in very shallow water in the
backs of coves and cuts in the lake, feeding primarily on blue dragonflies, and they would hit senkos and buzzbaits all day.  I joked that if you were not around numerous dragonflies, you would not catch fish.  That was not far from the truth.  Someone even saw a local fishing with one of those infomercial dragonfly-on-a-lilypad lures.
I got a 16.5 inch bass from the back of a cove with a senko, of which I had very few in the color I had confidence in.  By the end of the tournament, the only one left was the one on my line, all others had been lost while catching bass.  That gave me three at 14.5, 16.5, and 18.5 inch largemouth.  All other short fish I got were under 14.5, so no help.  I called the 16.5 inch bass my “kicker” short fish.
At the day one weigh-in, another angler also had one at 18.5 and he got big bass with 3.53 that beat my 3.47 lb.  My total was 7.08 lb.  Second was 4.82, then third with 2.62.  Someone said that the hourly Big Bass tournament only had one BIG bass that went about 4 lbs.  The two 18.5 inch bass would be the only two over 18 for the tournament.
On day two, I started at the place where I got the largest bass, but did not get a bite, despite the numerous bass busting shad in the cove.  A week or two from now and I bet all the bass in the lake will be in the coves busting bass, we just missed it by that much.
We then started tossing the senkos at the bank to get our two “short” fish in the boat.  This proved to take longer than the day before.
At the weigh in, there were a lot of the “under” fish, but nothing over 18 inches.  The bigger bass were just that much harder to locate and get to bite.  I tried to Carolina-rig, but there was just too much cover in the water.
I would recommend going back.  A great lake with trophy potential.  Here are some of the pictures.

09/30/03  In response to the question of where are the improvements to the lake, I had this email from the city of Lubbock's Randy Truesdell the city's community services director.

Mr. Burk,

As of March of this year, the management of the Sam Wahl Recreational
Area, Lake Alan Henry, was placed in the Parks and Recreation
Department.  The City Council decided not to build any structures at the
Rec. Area until Design Guidelines and a Development Plan were approved
by the City Council.  The Design Guidelines will dictate the style and
materials for all of the buildings, signs and improvements.  The
Development Plan will locate future improvements. In May of this year
the Council approved a contract with Parkhill Smith and Cooper to
develop the Design Guidelines and the Development Plan.  The Design
Guidelines are scheduled to be considered by the City Council in January
of 2004.  Upon approval, we can move forward with plans, construction
documents, construction bid award and construction of the first phase of
development.  Restrooms are one on the items planned for the first
phase.  Construction of the restrooms could begin next summer.

Let me know if you have questions or need additional information.

09/28/03 Most everything was small this weekend, that was caught.  One of the Tournaments came all the way from Denver.  { 5# was winner on Saturday}.  Guys don't give up on this lake you were just a couple weeks early.  The shad are continuing to school, but not much luck throwing into them.  The following are pictures of the second time someone has seen a buck crossing the lake, nice buck.  Capt'n Mike

We were fishing Alan Henry the morning of 9-27-03 in the mouth of Little Grape. We heard a splash and looked around to see this buck deer swimming across the lake. I then took the following pictures. I will also include a picture of the largest bass I caught that day (4.0 lbs).

Richard Hartmann
Hartmann Bros., Inc.

09/22/03  Fishing was not good this past weekend, not much happening.  Everyone I talked to was catching small stuff or nothing at all.  The crappie just seem to like the night time, they sure were not biting in the sun light.  A few people were having a little luck on there trotlines.  I would like to invite everyone who uses the lake to email Lubbock's city council and ask where are the improvements that you promised when you raised the prices to the lake.  The following is taken from Lubbock's own website.  It's not nice to promise something and not deliver.  Come on Lubbock, where are the improvements.  Capt'n Mike

PS this is the page on there website where the following is found.  http://water.ci.lubbock.tx.us/Lake%20Alan%20Henry/Camping_Boating/campingframe.htm

Scheduled Improvements:

A flush toilet facility will be constructed on the south side of the parking lot in the fall of 2002, and will be fully functional for the 2003 season.  Also during this time, three additional fishing piers, one swimming platform in a designated swimming will be installed, as well as 1.5 miles of hiking trails, with interpretive shelter.

Future improvements will include expanding the parking facilities and developing campgrounds

.

09/16/03  As the temp continues to fall the fishing is getting more active.  A 10 plus bass was caught this weekend, caught on top water.  The crappie were slow, but there were only a few reports in.  There are bass tournaments for the next 2 weekends, that should produce some good fish.   The lake is 8.4ft from being at the minimum operating depth, what a lake it will be when it is full.   Captn' Mike

09/08/03  A 10# plus black won the tournament, a lot of good fish and reports of near misses, says that fall fishing is picking up.  The water temp is falling and the fish are about 15ft to 20ft., I think a top  water in the color of blue or pink right now would work because of the amount of dragon flies on the lake.  As a friend said, who was painting his blue, that he had a 10# plus on but got off, that when it washed off he stopped getting strikes.  Think natural, what they are eating right now, dragon flies, grasshoppers, etc.  The crappie are really picking up at night.  Capt'n Mike.

9-3-03

Spent the day fishing worms in brush at the edge of deep water. The water temp stayed at 76 to 78 degrees all morning. Nothing big, but lots of action out of the 12 to 13 inch bass. Found a few fish nearly every where I went. Later in the day the water temp moved up to 80-81 degrees. No luck in deep water, but maybe so the bigger bass will start to move in where I can find 'em!

Willie

09/04/03  The points seem to be the best right now, and using worms is the trick.  The lake area had a nice rain, about 2-3 inches on the water shed.  The catfishing has been good up river in the red water, but that should be slowing down now.  The water temps should be falling, with this cool week.  All help with temperatures this fail is greatly appreciated.  Remember to tell our sponsors that you appreciate there sponsorship of this site, it sure helps out.  Capt'n Mike

08/21/03  Still very hot, not a lot happening, except it is real nice without the traffic on the lake.  When school starts, the summer is over at Henry.  Fishing the shad schools is still productive as well as the points with deep diving lures.  The crappie action is at night as well as the catfishing. A friend said he saw a 12 point buck crossing the lake at Little Grape this morning, must have been hot.  Capt'n Mike

I fished Alan Henry yesterday, Friday 8-15-03.  Caught only 5 for the day, but all in the 3# plus range.  Shad top water early for one, watermelon worm for 2 later, pumpkin worm for one around noon, and last one around 1:00 pm on bass asassination just before I went in.  Water temp still around 80-85 depending where you are and water depth.  Did lots of exploring and looking, so all 5 were caught in different areas of the lake.  Also, I hooked the largest water snake I've seen in quite a while, on a top water.  Accidently fouled hooked him while trying to shoo him away.  What was I thinking.  Seemed like a good idea at the time.  (Managed to release him unharmed, except for a small hook wound in the skin.)  JacqueS000@aol.com

Mike

I have had a good streak of top water action.
But Sat morning north winds killed the action ; so I put on 7 ''  pumpkinseed power worms on our lines and we started casting trees on wall ledges and client - Ronnie Kenmore  from Muleshoe , Tx   hooks this  12 lb. Largemouth bass .
He started stripping line and came up twice, but  Ronnie did an excellent job of getting him in . We had to bend him to get him in the livewell as he didnt fit. Our hearts pounded for 10 min straight. Mr. Kenmore decided to let him go . This was definitly a wall hanger. Catch and Release is what has made this lake what it is.

Hey Capt'n Mike,
Just wanted to let you know that J.R. and I were out Saturday morning (8/16) and I caught this 12lb bass on a texas riged pumpkin seed worm.  What a great thrill to experience landing one that size. She was released!!  We are lucky to have such a great lake in this area.
Thanks,
Ronnie Kenmore

08/13/03 Well this is West Texas, one week 100's next week in the 80's, it got to change things.  Capt'n Mike

08/06/03  Man is it hot!!!  The shad are still running early and late.  Use something that falls through the schools of shad.  A bass assassin with the head bit of and replace it with a lead headed hook works best.  Cast right into the shad schools and have some fun.  Nothing over 18 inches but a lot of fun.  Capt'n Mike

08/01/03  Lots of top water action, late and early on buzz baits, ones with 2 props work best.  Crappie are late nighters as well as the catfish.  Capt'n Mike

                             Water  Temp  83*
                Main Lake-stained....Muddy up rivers

Bass top water action is the best Ive ever seen on this lake.
They are surfacing in the morning and hitting a variety of lures..and flukes. The key is the wind direction. The old timers are right...
......" South or West is best. East ..fish bite the least.                              North ..dont venture forth. "
AH is like that Jerry Reed song " When its Hot its Hot !!!
and when its not its not. "

*Catfish are biting good . just go up the river till the water color changes....they cant resist cut perch.
*Crappie is slow ; but they have turned on in the 3 rd week of sept. as long as I have been scribbling in my log.
well::::::thats the scoop. call or e-mail me

07/28/03  Most of the bass are being taken in the evening and morning on top water especially on double buzz baits.  The catfish and crappie are best at night on baited holes.  Capt'n mike

07/21/03  Well records don't last long around this lake, I had just got my certificate for the lake record flathead and was going to Grubs to show it off, when I got out of my truck, they were weighing in a flathead that beat mine by 4 #.  The fish weighed in at 41#, caught on perch. Capt'n Mike

Mike Cloud, Brian Cloud, and Cory Cleveland, New Lake Record Flathead 07/20/03

At about 8 am my dad, myslef and a buddy of mine decided to run our trotline before we started bass fishing.  When we got to the trotline we started running it as usual, taking off a couple of small catfish.  Then my buddy says "I think we are hung."  And right about that time at very large fish tugs and nearly pulls my buddy in the water.  After about a 10 minute struggle we managed to get the fish in the boat.  We had no idea how big the fish was but it was to big to fit in our live well and too big to fit in any cooler we had.   So we had to tie up to the side of the boat and let it float in the water  while we bass fished.  When we got to Grubb's we weighed it in at 41 lbs. which happened to be the lake record.  we alos managed to catch 2 bass over 18 inches.  Great day of fishing

Mike !

                     Topwater Action is HOT !!!
Just be at the right place at the right time...early in the morning. Pop Rs . Then bass move off to 25 -35 ft of water and bite till noon ; then its over till evening. e-mail or call to book a half day trip.                    Watch that Line

07/18/03  Night time may be the right time to fish right now.  Capt'n Mike

Had an unusual night of fishing Wednesday night. The
wind was coming out of the west at first..then
switched to the east. I caught 6 bass over 4 pounds,
but the best one by itself would have made the trip a
success. I caught it on a 10 inch power worm in 35
foot of water, texas rigged. My little scale read it
at 13.5 pounds. All the fish were released. She's
still out there........Dan Leach

07/11/03  Best bet on bass still are fishing the shad schools early and late and fishing the shallow water off of the points.  The crappie are good at night as well as the catfish.  Capt'n Mike

We were crazy enough to be there the whole weekend of the 4th.
It really wasn't that bad. Except for the idiots on the Jet Skies.
They never even look where they are going just looking for the WAKE, not
understanding there is a boat around!!! Any way we caught 3 bass about 6#
and a couple of 4's.
Have a nice weekend,
Jill

Caught 2 4#'s and a 5# on a white med. dive crankbait all three fish were on the main lake in about 5 to 6 feet with deeper water nearby. also had plenty of fun chasing smaller fish that were schooled up. what an awesome sight!

By the way was any crazy enough to venture out over the 4th - I bet it was crazy out there. I am sure those dividers took a beating.

MXCR78@aol.com

07/07/03  The bass are still busting the shad early and late.  Catfishing and crappie are good at night.  Capt'n Mike

You dont have to be old to begin or become a Bass fisherman. Kolbi Tate, 3 years old, grandson of Larry Sears from Snyder,Tex, knew how to land his first bass and was proud of it.  Caught at Alan Henery  June 22,2003.  Take a child fishing.  The rewards are beyond your wildest dreams

06/27/03  Pretty darn slow, the lake is catching water.  The bass that are being caught are busting shad early and late, shad colored tubes work well.   The catfish are the best bet with this new water.  Capt'n Mike

06/18/03  The shad are running in Gobbler Creek early in the morning, tubes shad color, white to black are working on them, top water is not working.  Cast into the shad and let it fall, lots of fun.  Capt'n Mike

Cap’t. Mike,

Caught 7 bass over 6 pounds with an 8 pound big fish and broke one off fishing Thursday Friday and Saturday. Upper creeks are loaded with smaller fish in muddy water on white spinnerbaits. Better fish caught on big dark worms in 20-25 feet on main lake and at night.

Jim Simpson Canyon, TX

06/13/03  Bass are still being caught, they are just hard to find.  Best bet is white spinners and dark worms but a friend said that a rabbit haired jig was working for him.  Crappie and Catfish are both good at night in baited holes.  Capt'n Mike

Looks like Jaws to me, 15 yellow cat or flathead caught on big minnows.

We got their Saturday morning and fished till 2 PM with little success only
caught 1 five pounder and 1small bass. However it was our first time to the
lake and we have to learn sometime. Didn't have time to fish for cats or
crappie. Had a great time anyway.

Rick

06/11/03  The bass are pretty hard to find, but the other night we were fishing for crappie which were biting live and dead minnows by the light of the moon and latern, we got splashed by bass hitting stuff on top of the water.  May be some top water with this full moon, by day spinners and worms.  Capt'n Mike

6-11-03

Fished hard all day. Water was dingy with lots of leaf trash. Bass hard to
find, but did find a few hitting worms.  Water temperature showed to be 76
to 78 degrees on main lake and up toward Gobbler Creek area.

06/06/03  The bass have taken a rain day, and the catfish are picking up the slack.  The lake has caught about 2ft since Thursday.  You can keep up with the rise by clicking lake levels above.  Even old Capt'n Mike catches a big one every now and then. The one on the left is the new lake record yellow or flathead at 37# and the other is 22#. caught on large minnows.  Capt'n Mike

Capt'n Mike gets lucky!!

Mike,

Caught this 9.1 on 5-22, I was working on one that was well over ten, but couldn’t get a hook in her.

05/26/03  Pretty bad weather this weekend, but we got lucky on some big yellows with perch.  If you have not eaten a yellow or blue out of this clean lake you are sure missing a treat.  Capt'n Mike

05/23/03
R.G. Box and his brother sent me these photos from a 5-22 morning trip to
Alan Henry, these fish were caught on worms in the main lake area. One was
7-8 and the other 8-8.

05/21/03  The lake is taking on some water, they had about an 1'" of rain, should put some oxygen in the water but will probally slow the bass down, they were slow this past weekend.  The catfishing has been improving and with this new water the upper river and upper tributarys should be good.  Always chum your area, if you want to catch catfish in this lake.  It really works.  Capt'n Mike

05/15/03  The bedding is over, some top water in the morning and evening and some worm action.  I would try a clear ghost and see what happens.  Capt'n MIke

Nothing big, but had fun Monday, May 12th. Worm fished the better part of
the day. Experimented with a 4 inch worm, Texas rigged without sinker. Not a
lot of bass in any one area, but seemed like some action most near ever
place I went. Found that the fish reacted to the weightless worm kinda
different to what I'm used to. No tap-tap-tap. Just took the worm and
started moving off with it--specially the bigger fish. Missed 3 or 4 because
I would react too quick when they would start moving off and was not hitting
them hard enough to cross their eyes and get the hook set. By the time I
figured out my problem, the darned wind came up, water got choppy and fish
quit hitting. Looking forward to getting back amongst 'em soon as possible!

Visited with a man at the boat ramp who had picked up a couple of nice bass
off of a bed,
fishing------minnows. Said he took a male off the bed, put him in a fishwell
and waited. In a little while the big female showed up and he drifted a
minnow across and she nailed it. Boy, sounds like I'm gonna have to learn
how to fish them beds 'fore next Spring comes around.

Willie

Went fishing at AH Saturday, May 10th, in rather windy conditions. I caught 12 fish from 2 to 8 pounds by fishing the windward shorelines with plastic worms and bass assassins. I tried fishing the protected shorelines with no luck. The bigger fish still showed some bedding signs, raw areas on tail. This lake is impressing me more each time I fish it. keep up the good work.

05/11/03  Some giant bass continue to be caught this spring, still seeing some bedding but you must be persistent,  Catfish have been good in baited areas same with crappie.  Capt'n Mike

Found temp. on main lake yesterday (Wed.) at 69 degrees.  Up the river above
Gobbler Creek it was a pretty consistent 72 degrees.

A few big bass still being caught off of beds by the sight fishermen.
However, smaller bass were hard for me to find. Much slower than last week
and water dingy in places. Did pick up a 3lb 10 oz in 10 ft water in brushy
flat  adjacent to 30 ft water (White Spinner).  Be glad when the weather
finally settles and the fish get into some kind of a pattern. Every trip I
have made this Spring I have caught fish in a different place, but none in
the same place as earlier trips.

Willie

05/06/03  This lake continues to produce some real big bass, a lot of 10-12#s weighed this past weekend.  Lizards and other plastics seem to be the ticket.  The bedding looks to be about over. Catfish and crappie are good right now, with the crappie in the upper creeks.  I went up Red branch the other day, this lake as it fills up will may lose some beauty, but some of the new canyons you can get into now are assume.  Capt'n Mike  PS Click here for results of Clear Channel {KQBR} Tournament.

Fished from 4 am to 4 PM didn't find one bass on the beds. I marked crappie and perch all over the beds. The bass were suspended in post spawn patterns in the trees in the center of the creek near the edges of the creek in 12 feet of water. I boated several at the 20 foot mark with the carolina rig on secondary points, the senko bite was non existent Sunday. The bass were slapping the spinner baits being aggressive but not biting. The lake looks great I marked 66 degree water in the back of grape and 62 on the main lake, the water was clear to 4 feet.
P. S watch the flying turkeys in Big Grape I had several near misses. Man what a sight.

04/29/03  The crappie and catfish are starting to show a lot of promise.  The crappie are really picking up in the upper creeks at night.  The lake picked up some water today, it was running about a foot deep under the hwy. 84 bridge, that should make for some good catfishing today in the brown water.  The bass have truly been great this month, you may scratch you boat a little but the beds are in shallow water, a good pair of sunglasses is a must to site fish.   Capt'n Mike

Capt Mike,

I just wanted to write and reiterate the sentiments of the anglers and articles written in relation to this awesome bass sanctuary.  We were introduced to Lake Alan Henry by a close friend today, even though the wind was at a constant 20+ early on with some impressive gusts, but later calming for some great evening fishing.  The pictures are of my wife’s first exposure to catching bass; needless to say though they weren’t trophy size, they were big enough and exciting enough to increase her hunger in search of more.  A huge thanks goes out to you for providing this awesome site and the individuals responsible for maintaining Lake Alan Henry.

We will see you on the lake,

Derek and Amie Franz Portales NM

04/27/03  The was a great amount of nice bass caught yesterday, when I left a 11# was big fish.  I will get the results posted..  Capt'n Mike

04/21/03  T J Taylor won the tournament Saturday with a combined weight of 23.97 on three fish and big fish with an 11.9.   Fishing is good.  Capt'n Mike

04/19/03  The wind continues to blow, may be the best defense the lunkers in this lake have.  Remember to not let a storm catch up on the Grape Creeks, they tend to sneak up on you there. Capt'n Mike

04/18/04  T J Taylor boated a 10# yesterday, several good fish we caught bed fishing, seems like no pattern of what they are biting I saw a lot of black to dark colors in plastic being used.  The crappie are biting in the sallow water at dark, try 5ft with a light and the catfish are good on perch and stink bait.  Capt'n Mike

Mike,

I ran down to the lake Wednesday 4/16 after the winds calmed down some, and got on the water about 3 p.m.  The bass I found were holding VERY tight to the cover, and after losing three fish to getting wrapped around limbs/broken off, I went to my 25lb. line rig and managed to land one about 3.5 and another right at 7lb, plus a couple smaller ones.  Water temps ranged from 62 to 66 in a couple of places.

04/16/03  It was a good day to do IRS Taxes yesterday; just because probably one of the best fishing days of the year passed with 50-60 mph winds, we will never know.  Today the winds are howling too, but usually this is followed by a beautiful day. I sure hope so.  Capt'n Mike

Fellow Anglers
                       Its Big Bass Time  !!!
The bass are on the beds. Sight fishing is what it takes to catch that bass of a lifetime. Lizzards are producing well in black and pumpkinseed. The crappie are also spawning up the creeks. White curlytail grubs worked on the channels edges gives you all the action you can stand. Come get in on the action. If your wife beats you up ---its worth it.

Hey mike:

Fished Saturday night till about midnight for crappie, caught a bunch {60 crappie, one keeper}.  Had a great time, but wonder where the bigger fish are.  All seemed to be males, 7 or 8 colored up for spawn.  Any Insights where the females are when this happens

Jerb

04/14/03  The biggest fish yesterday was right at 12#, caught in the Honeyhole Tournament.  Lots of people using grubs, and plastic worms, but seeing a little results on top water.  The full moon is Wednesday, I would think that there would be a little night time bass fishing happening.  The catfish are being a little more cooperative, with the crappie being hard to find and small.  Capt'n Mike

04/11/03  If you are wanting a big bass the next 2 weeks may be it, better reports coming in each day, no big one caught yesterday that I heard off, but fish were being caught. Capt'n Mike

Hi Mike. Just a quick note to let you know that I found the water temp up to 63 degrees late this afternoon. Most folks I talked to either got no fish or small bass. Didn't talk to any crappie fisherman. Talk had it that someone got a 4 1/2 lb bass, but just rumor I picked up 3rd hand.

After getting my pickup motor replaced I have made 4 exploring trips to L A Henry. Just as you predicted, I think it is a great lake! Bad winds with whitecapping 2 trips and bad wind but no white caps one trip. Finally, today was decent with little wind. However, even with the bad wind I used those days to explore the layout of the lake and pick up a few small bass.

Today I found the fish suspended in 25 ft. water up against some of the steep banks. Hard to get the suspended fish to strike, but did pick up 4 in the 14 to 15 inch class on jiggs and spinners. Spent all of today exploring the lake back west of boat ramp. Looks like LAH is going to be a great lake for Jiggs, Worms and Topwater lures when them cotton-pickers move up into the shallow water brush and get serious with feeding. Fishing a narrow, deepwater lake is a new experience for me. Am looking forward to getting it figured out.

Thanks again for the info you are providing on your site!

My buddy and I just wanted to let everyone know you don’t need a fancy boat to catch big fish.  Both fish were caught the weekend of the fourth.
The first fish is 6 lbs 3 oz and the second is 5 lbs 10 oz
Thank you and happy fishing.

Caught this on the 5th of April while fishing for crappie. > The storm ran us off the lake shortly after. > Don Boes

04/10/03  I think anytime between now and a week after the full moon fishing should be great.  One fellow caught a 4,6 and 12# yesterday all on a black grub.  Catfish are slow, but the crappie are still showing promise.  Capt'n Mike

04/05/03  I think we are a week away from heaven barring a cold front, its real close to spawn.  The Sun Country Tournament caught some nice fish today.  Capt'n Mike

04/04/03  Lots of traffic at the lake yesterday and this morning.  The same person that caught a 4# bass on Tuesday, caught a 6# yesterday on a white spinner.  Talking to some wormers they said that dark color was what they were seeing some action on.  The crappie are still improving with night time being the best fishing.  Capt'n Mike

04/02/03  The bass are showing some movement into the shallows, but not on the beds yet.  One report of a 4# bass today, said it was caught on a black spinner.  Crappie are good in Gobler and up Rocky.  Capt'n Mike

03/29/03  Several good bass caught this week, but the temp keep the lake to just warming up 2* now at 58*. but the forecast is for a warm week with temps in the 80's, that should change things.  Most luck was on Jigs, blue to black in nature, I have been using a blue to silver minnow, some success, but nothing great.  The crappie are still showing improvement.  Capt'n Mike

03/27/03  Today probably will be good before this front arrives, but the winds are predicted to 40 to 50 mph today also, be careful about being caught out in thunderstorm on this lake, its real tricky with only one public ramp.  Fishing in all areas is picking up.  Capt'n Mike

Mike !
                                  Its Time ! ! !
The fish are biting . I caught some nice bass on suspending rogues fished medium speed on main lake points. Then I ran up the river and caught 51 crappie on white curlytail grubs fished right on channel edges.

03/24/03  Water temp is 56*, I had one report of seeing a big black on her bed, it was a so-so weekend, fish not cooperating yet.  They are starting to bite in more shallow water, 4-5 and less, try a bass assassin and minnow looking grubs.  Capt'n Mike

03/21/03  Water temp is about the same all week, at the end of the day upper parts are really warming up.  I talked to several happy fishermen yesterday.  Fishing with jigs one group said they had good success up to a 9#, they said they were finding them in 6-8ft water.  The crappie continue to show promise as well as the catfishing.  My bet on bass is in about 10-14 days but a good cold front could push that back.  Everyone needs to put new line on, I feel a state record coming out of the lake this spring.  Capt'n Mike

Ps send in water temps please

03/17/03  Water temp is coming up, up river I found some 64* temp late Sunday afternoon.  Some good reports on keeper crappie, but the bass were a little slow.  Some of the bass were in the 5# range.  At dark on Sunday afternoon I noticed a few bass hitting the top.  Capt'n Mike

The fish are finally staring to move !!

03/15/03  Lots of people going to the lake, alot last night, I'll bet we all should be fishing this weekend with the water temp up and the full moon next week. I've got to go buy a battery before I can go, see ya there. Good Luck Capt'n Mike

03/13/03  Action, at least at Grubbs yesterday morning, spring break and all, lots of people going fishing yesterday.  There have been some nice bass starting to be caught, they are still deep and most are caught on crankbaits.  Also some keeper crappie being caught, mostly on minnows.  Capt'n Mike

Dear Mike,

Ron Ledgerwood and I went to Alan Henry 3-10-03.  We caught 8
bass up to 5 lbs. 4 ozs.  We also had another over 18 inches.
These bass were not in shallow water, and were caught on deep
diving crank baits.
We found the water temperture was from 48 to 55 degrees.
                            Thanks,
                            Norman Clayton

I have made it easier at the top to get the city council's email address's, if you have been to the lake recently, you have noticed the curbs dividing the boat lanes, if not you will when you go.  For my own knowledge I would like to know what you think and if you want to email the city council fell free to do so.  Anything for speed and safety . Please respond.  Capt'n Mike

03/9/03 Big Bass!!!!!  Weighed 11.2 pounds at the bait store. Caught in about 20 feet of water . Happy fisherman is Josh..March 9, 2003. Alan Henry..

03/10/03  Well the good news is that a 10# bass won the tournament this weekend, several others in the 5-6# range were caught, but to talk to them most went home empty handed.  With last weeks cold snap, the water temp stayed the same.  Fish were holding in about 27ft. of water.

Some friends and I fished the lake from noon to dusk on 3/07/03 and did not even get a bite. We fished deep, shallow and in between with plastics, cranks, spinners, jerk baits...nothing. We did see about a 5-6# bass halfway up grape creek swimming very slow just under the water. I hit her with a jerk bait and she slowly went deep. she looked sick or something and was right beside the boat. Hope it picks up soon!
Joe Hamilton

03/07/03  Looks like a good weekend with pleasant weather in the 70s, water temps are still cold.  Capt'n Mike

0313/03/03  A 10# bass won the tournament this weekend, but he was about the only happy fisherman, real cold and real slow, with a good report of crappie up the river though.  Capt'n Mike

I managed to catch some keeper crappie up river towards the power lines this saturday. I was using road runner jig head with a blue/white 1 1/2" tiny shad assassin. Some were a pound and a half. Nice mess for dinner.

Mike,

A buddy of mine and I fished Alan Henry yesterday (Sat), got there about 2pm and I showed 49.5 degrees at the boat dock, 50 degrees most everywhere we went on the lake, with a couple of spots up to 51.5 or so up in the shallows (less than 6 feet of water).  We sure couldn't find the bass, we fished about 3 hours and only caught one little 12".

-Richard Feagan

Dear Capt. Mike,

I went to Alan Henry on Feb. 12, 2003, and caught only one
bass.  It weighed 5 lbs. 11 ozs.  I thought I had a good day
of fishing because I was not at work, and I will take a nearly
6 lb. bass any day.

The water temp was fron 46 degrees to 50 degrees.
                    Thanks,
                     Norman Clayton

02/20/03  Well, at least someone had some luck this weekend.  Capt'n Mike

It sounds like we did better than average.  We caught two fish, both around 4#.  The water is still about 48 degrees.  We found those fish all the way back in big grape where the water gets muddy and was a little warmer (50 degrees).  The lake looks to be in great shape, hope they will limit development on the water though.  Take care and thanks for the reports.

Darrell

02/19/03  I was dead wrong about the full moon, it was a terrible weekend and besides the fish not biting.  No good reports, someone please catch something.  The lake looks perfect with the water level near an all time high.  If the weather stays warm we should see some bedding going on in March.  I here that the golden alge is near the Abilene pumping station, soon to be in OH Ivie Lake.  Possum Kingdom is experiencing another out break.  Lets hope that these lakes get new water in the form of rain to set this thing back.  Capt'n Mike

02/08/03  The crappie have been trying to bite a little, the bass are slow and deep.  I have not heard of any catfish being caught.  My best guess is the full moon next weekend, if it warms up we may see some bass action.  It has sure been cold here.  Capt'n Mike

01/26/03  Fishing is rather slow as you should expect but there have been a few good bass caught, mostly on minnows and white spinners.  If I were you I would not come to this lake right now without a white spinner, big blade seems to be the best.  The crappie are hard to find and if you do no one is talking.  Capt'n Mike

12/29/02  Not much happening at the lake, a few hunters and some real lucky fishermen have enjoyed some real mild days.  Here are some good results though.  Capt'n  Mike

Captn Mike, this is the bass caught by Keenan Foy, Sunday Dec. 15, 2002.  He measured 20" and weighed 4 1/2 lbs.

Just to let you know having trouble catching more than 1 or 2 fish but the
good news is last four fish have all weighed over 4#'s. White spinnerbait
caught em all - silver blades seem to be the ticket. 3 were in about 6 - 8
foot of water with the last in about 12 - 15.MXCR78@aol.com

I took my dad Jack Bains and my rat terrier Luis fishing Sunday before last and caught this 21 ½ inch bass on a white spinner bait in about 3 ft water upriver from the marina just as the sun was getting up good.

Ronnie Foy and his son Keenan caught one just a hair smaller later in the day, I think on a live minnow.

Sure was fun. Both are back in the lake ready for next time.

Jack Bains

12/27/02  Here is an interesting email that come to my attention, I will address this at a later date, but I think this is very important if you fish or recreate on Lake Alan Henry.

In a couple of weeks the city of Lubbock is going to vote on rate hikes for Allen Henry. They state the reasons as such: To discount rates for the city of Lubbock residents who already pay the debt service on AH through water rates, To attract large families to visit the lake, efficient to collect, and getting worse. These will be the highest rates in the state and they are talking too about limiting the amount of people on the lake. So help!!!!!!!!!!!!!
